you'd be better posting this at the forum below and you'll get plenty of advice and suggestions.

I would go for a single room in an apartment if you can afford it?

Prenzlberg and Friedrichshain to the North and East of Alexanderplatz are probably the best for eating out boozing etc. Prenzlberg is becoming gentrified but a good area North of the Alex.

Friedrichshain would be a bit cheaper, a student area around Boxhagener strasse, Simon Dach strasse and Grunberger strasse and the surrounding area!

In the links below!

U-bahn S-bahn map and berlin street map, click on the square box with the squares inside it to the top after the map loads up and this will expand it!!

bad news, the Leipzigerplatz is put on hold as Orco has no money for the projectdue to the financial crisis, this is ontop of them cancelling the Fehrbelliner project in Mitte, they are trying to get a partner to come in!

Translation using Astalavista from the link below!

250 million a euros expensive project stands on the dump: In the spring the construction work should begin, but plans to the former value home area the money is missing to the investor. Now it looks for partners

http://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/We...art270,2763236

Oh well, hopefully they'll get a partner soon or Leipzigerplatz will remain an uncompleted eyesore!

Anyone who is interested in the ongoing construction at Ostkreuz station can see updates and photos here at the link below!

The first steel sections have been mounted to the East of the present location.

I take it that the platform will be built in between the two steel bridges!

All pics from the link below.

At the bottom of the page in the web-site below, if you click Nachste it will give you more photos from an earlier date! On page 4 there are short videos of construction works!

Nice set of photos of the Tempelhof Hafen posted by Backstein at the link below!

Shows how the area has developed since my photos of summer 2008!

Article in German of the work done, I think it says should be completed by April this year!

Translation using babel!

"At the end of April opens at the Tempelhofer dam new quarters - in beautiful water situation by Uwe Aulich The new meeting ship already fastened in the Tempelhofer port. The 67 meters long Glauchau lies still the wrong way round and must therefore 180 degrees. " Catering trade is on the ship possible, it can also as sea-stage for volume used werden" , Christian says project management GmbH to these, the managing director of the HLG. It the ship coming week again to baptize, it keeps then the names " Old love Tempelhof" - is called then in such a way and, as the 1904 to 1908 built port was once called in former times. The ship baptism is the prelude for the opening of the new shopping centre at the Tempelhofer port, which opens its doors for the customers on 29 April at eight o'clock."

Look at the difference between my photos of September 2008 and Backstein's of January 2009 to see how well they renovated this building!

Rent a flat in Mitte, you can get good deals. Mitte is a great area for Restaurants too - try to stay near Hackesher Markt - its an awesome area.

Berlin isn't standing still, that's for sure
If only Stockholm would actually plan like this. They say they're gonna in pretty much all early documents but then it's all watered down towards suburbia.

After only 17 months construction period took place to today's 27. May 2009 the completion of carcass of the east wing of the museum for natural history Berlin, destroyed in the war. Presumably into September 2010 the zoo-logical collection existence comprehensive over 257.000 glasses will also draw the wet collections so called, as well as preparation workshops and work spaces of the museum for natural history Berlin here in alcohol conserved animals.

Over 730 t steel blocked, 466 concrete vehicles with 2.800 cubic meters of freight were needed, 22,207 m electrical cables were moved. 150 coworkers were daily busy at the reconstruction of the east wing on the average, who had worked even in the coldest winter for 50 years, in order to keep the time schedule: Into September into collection halls like a hall and the zweigeschossigen of the new building over 257.000 glasses in alcohol conserved frogs, queues, lizards spiders and worms will also draw 2010. The wet collections of the largest naturkundlichen research establishment of Germany had to be stored so far under conditions, which are particularly problematic for the preservation of the collection objects and under fire protection-technical criteria. The collections are archives of nature and basis for the study of the evolution of the earth and the life.

With the optimal accommodation of our wet collections in the east wing completely more substantially and particularly endangered part of this archives of the life is gerettet" on a long-term basis; , so Reinhold of flax fields, general manager of the museum for natural history, which stressed: " Our collections are however not only most important research basis, it are also of high cultural importance. The accommodation of our wet collections in the east wing serves thus also the protection German Kulturgutes." It is pleased flax fields that over half millions will also profit annually museum visitor from the new east wing: Its ground floor will become part of the exhibition round course, so that visitors receive in the future an authentic impression from the scientific collections of the museum. "

The gradual redevelopment of the natural history museum stands just like the building of the new Federal Intelligence Service center symbolically for the gradual development of the accomodation around the Chausseestraße. Here an area develops, in which attractive living, cultural benefit and work and inspire mutually can interconnect. Same is valid for the lying close accomodation heath road: a project that the ecological and economic requirements of a new Urbanität become fair wird" , so Regula Lü, directress of building of senates in the senate administration for town development Berlin. " The natural history museum takes thereby as cultural point of anchor in a dynamically developing Kiez a privileged position. With its 200-jährigen tradition and history it works identity-donating and participates at the same time in the current departure of the Quartiers."

Destruction and reconstruction of the east wing The museum for natural history, established by the architect August Tiede 1885-1889, met 1945 a bomb in 2. Upper floor of the east wing and damaged the halls for the insect collections, the library and that " Anatomical Saal" the exhibition in the ground floor. By the way tearing of the supporting columns the east wing of the museum into the cellar collapsed. In the year 1995 an architectural competition became the modernization and basic repair of the museum for natural history of servant & Servant architect won. In November 2006 the reconstruction began.
