Lakewood, NJ

This is one of the fastest growing communities in New Jersey. The 2010 census indicated that the town grew 53.8% between 2000 to 2010, to rise to a total population of 92,843. The 2015 estimate has it at 99,262. The 2016 population estimate is likely over 100,000 now. Anyone have the 2016 estimate? Any projections to 2020 or 2030?

The city also faces deep budget issues, especially for its school board due to the high number of private school enrollees and low number of public school students, in which the state school aid formula is based on. The whole public financing issues for the city and school board fascinate me deeply.

Some recent news articles on the situation facing the public school board finances.

Unfortunately the census didn't release estimates for unincorporated places this year. Lakewood is a township, so the Census counts it as an unincorporated place.

Quite lame.

It sounds like a Kiryas Joel-style Hasidic colony grafted administratively into another town. That's an automatic recipe for failure. Those orthodox Hasidic communities tend to be extremely closed and insular, and the only rational thing to do in those cases is to spin them off into their own towns.

Where did they get access to that? I just checked, and there's still no data for NJ townships in the 2016 PEP/PEPANNRES dataset on the Census Bureau's American FactFinder site.

Gonna keep digging around to see if I can find it.

Lakewood is the fastest growing place in NJ specifically because of Orthodox and Hasidic newcomers, mostly from Brooklyn and other more expensive areas in the tri-state.

With their large families, long-term growth is guaranteed.

And Lakewood is yet another example of the outdated Jewish stereotype. Everyone thinks of Jews as progressive, professional, educated, upper middle class to wealthy. Of course this exists, but is no longer the predominant norm in the NYC area. Super-high birthrates among Orthodox/Hasids and intermarriage/secularism among Reform Jews (and to a lesser extent, Conservative Jews) has remade the population.

In Brooklyn alone, there are 100,000 students in Jewish schools, almost all of them Orthodox or Hasidic. Something like 1 in 10 NYC school-age children are enrolled in Jewish schools. The suburban enclaves are overflow from this population expansion.

At its current growth rate, Lakewood will become the third-largest city in New Jersey by midcentury. As such, Kotler says, it will need better public transportation for a population forbidden to drive on the Sabbath, higher density housing for the thousands of rabbinical students and their families, a remake of the aging downtown.
In any other town in NJ, you'd be more likely to hear that the city needs better parking garages and needs to fight higher density housing than that it needs better public transportation and higher density.
