Today Utah plays Air Force. This game should give us all a better idea on just how good or bad are the Utes.

Based on that game...I still don't know. The TCU game will tell all.

Air Force and Utah games are always close games. However Utah always comes out on top in the end.
Next week will be a big test for Utah.

Oh shit Boise, don't look now. You just got jumped again and Utah is now knocking on your door.
Here are the latest BCS rankings.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/bcs

1 Oregon
2 Auburn
3 TCU
4 Boise State
5 Utah

How cool is it that 3 out of the top five teams are none-BCS schools. I guess at this point Boise will now better hope that Utah beats TCU so that they will fall back below them. However if Utah beats TCU then Utah could move up pass Boise then. So in any case Boise looks to STAY at that number 4 spot.

Boise is just a victim of it's soft part of their schedule. But I do find it funny that BSU is penalized for beating up on La Tech yet TCU gets rewarded for beating up on UNLV. But, whatever.

UNLV has played four top 25 schools on their schedule this season: 9/4 against #12 Wisconsin, 9/11 against #20 Utah, 10/2 against #25 Nevada, and 10/30 against #4 TCU.

La Tech has only once played a top 25 school this year: 10/26 against #3 Boise State.

While both UNLV and La Tech got beat up, I believe UNLV's schedule is more competitive in the eyes of the computers and that's why TCU jumped Boise State.

Yes but La Tech has actually won some of their games. I think what helped TCU is the great play of Baylor, a team TCU trounced earlier in the year.

And Utah beat Iowa State who beat Texas Tech who beat Baylor and Iowa State beat Texas at the time they were ranked #19. And Iowa State has a winning record, most of their losses coming from top 10 teams. And Utah scored the most points of any opponent at Iowa State that were EVER scored against them at home. That seems significant since they play Texas every year and Texas is usually in the top 10 and Texas had never managed to score that many points against them at Iowa State's home field.

So latest news is TCU to the Big East. That leaves the MWC looking like the WAC as it is now. Boise with a bunch of average teams.

What should the MWC do? Their contract with the Mtn channel is basically scaring everyone off, BYU for instance. You've got Gameday coming to SLC for the TCU vs. Utah game yet the game won't be available to practically anybody. The conference needs out of the Mtn contract, and into something with ESPN.

What was the MWC's timeline for getting (or getting word that they won't get) a BCS auto-bid? That is the only reason a TCU move to the Big East makes any sense at all. How long would the MWC have to hold on?

MWC's best hope now is that the Big 12 breaks up in two years and some of its teams end up going to the MWC.

MWC = the new WAC. Boise might as well stay in the WAC at this point.

Without Utah but with Boise, the MWC would need to have a waiver to become an AQ conference. If the MWC loses TCU, the MWC is not going to become an AQ conference even with a waiver.

Why without Utah but with Boise do they need a waiver? What are the criteria, any idea?

Utah has a higher win percentage of BCS schools than Boise during the evaluation period.

My understanding is that the criteria to become an AQ conference is based on the following:

Win percentage over current AQ conferences.
Final BCS standings for the conference members added together.
The highest ranking member of the conference in the BCS standings.
How many times a conference is represented in the top 25 standings at the end of the year.
And some computer calculations based on average Strenght of Schedule during the evaluation period.

With Utah and Boise, the MWC would have become an AQ conference. Without Boise and with Utah staying, the general thought is that a waiver would have still been needed. The bottom of the conference schools do bring down the numbers and they are what stops the MWC from becoming an AQ than anything else really.

Surely it's a factor that the ACC and Big East have been equally bad, if not worse. They are just awful football conferences...

Sure is nice being in a BCS conference.

The ACC and Big East haven't had dominant teams recently, but their middle and bottoms are much, much better than the MWC and WAC.

I suppose that's true.

How is the bottom of the PAC-10? To be honest, I don't think much about the Washington States, Stanfords, Oregon States, and even Arizonas of the world. I am excited because, well, it beats Iowa State in about a thousand other ways. But I haven't really focused on the bottom of the PAC football-wise. Maybe I should start. They're likely to be our company for a good long time!
