NJ has seen a small crime reduction. Which is good, as some of us recall the murders that occurred in Newark which at one point, was ridiculous for a city its size, and so close to the nations largest "safest" big city. Essex County and Camden County are still the major crime centers.

Two of the murders in my county (Somerset) happened less than a mile away from my house. Some kid killed his grandparents by smashing them in the face with a bat while they slept, than went to the Wal Mart with a blood soaked shirt.

Stockholm Metro (2.3 mil) seems to be at 10 or 11, but could be 14 or 15 in worst case.

The murders have almost exlusively taken place in the outer municipalities that for the metro-area. Only 2 have taken place in the actual city (pop 750 000).

Causes of death:

Firearm: 5
Knife: 4
Other/unknown: 6

Knife: 3 (Haninge, Täby, Solna)
Beating/Other: 2 (Märsta, Västertorp)
Unknown/unconfirmed: 4 (Södertälje, Tyresö x2, Tensta).

Malmö, known for being the "murder capital per capita" in Scandinavia (based on Scandinavian averages of course) has not had a single confirmed homicide yet, thankfully!

That seems like a lot for a northern European/Scandinavian metro with that size population, this early in the year.

It was also pretty cold this winter in the Midwest, not sure if that makes a difference.

There were a few particularly cold days but they were in the middle of the week (murders spike weekend nights, generally). We'll see how long it stays under a murder a day.

These are comparable year-to-date numbers though - winter happens every year. There's been nothing exciting about this winter in Chicago, it actually seems less snowy and the temperatures are typical. Aside from the three days of really cold temps in late January that ended up being more of a media sensation than anything to define this winter by. Got cold for three days and then shot up to 55 degrees.

Chicago is settling back into its "normal" over the past 15 years. The prior three years were MUCH higher than we had typically been seeing. There was a lot of pushback on the police after a high profile shooting and they reversed some of their tactics and loosened up on patrolling and stopping people as residents of the hard hit areas demanded. The result was the criminals immediately saw that and went to town shooting up those same hard hit areas.

Is that true? Not being snarky, truly curious. My assumption is that you wrote is true, but I just was hoping there was some investigative news. Whatever the reason, Huzzah!

I think Toronto stands at 10 currently, which, extrapolated, is an average count. Of course, the warm months tend to see more homicides.

chicago, total homicides through the end of february:

2017 - 108
2018 - 84
2019 - 49

drops of 55% and 42%, respectively.

chicago is now back to where it was in the 1st half of this decade before the MASSIVE homicide spike of 2016.

Naples, Italy had 24 murders connected to the local organized crime group Camorra in 2017.
In 2018 the number was only 6.

How many total murders are hard to find.
