So the Rolls is turning left on Wilshire into the parking lot of a cocktail lounge which is now the Los Angeles Dental Clinic. Cool. I wonder if any of the Burke's Law people knew Chastek -- the show was well known for its "in" casting of Gene Barry's buddies.

Cheers,

As both decades were before my time, I readily defer to anyone knowledgeable on the subject. When was the last time you could get a decent malt for 10 cents?

My parents used to take us up there when we were little, it was a pretty long hike, but not too difficult. Seems the hotel was owned by the owner of the railway, Professor Thaddeus Lowe.

any reasonably complete how-to posts in the thread on how-to post photos from my Flickr account? search function seems a bit underwhelming.

I use Photobucket, but I assume the same would go for Flickr. You need to type but without any spaces between the link and the brackets. And you need to do the same for each image you want to post.

It's been a while since we've discussed the various Brunswig buildings near the Plaza--Prudent Beaudry's old 'hood. (Speaking of Beaudry, where are you keeping yourself these days?) What I don't remember is that when Spring Street was cut through from the south, one of the larger Brunswig structures, now demolished, was moved as per the article above.

Those Denels shots are fantastic, e_r.

G_W, I am so glad you brought up the Brunswig Building near 'The Plaza'.

below: I've been harboring this fascinating snapshot from ebay for quite some time.

unknown/probably ebay

below: Various details from the original snapshot.

below: I wonder what the sign on the tree says?

below: I spy an 'el camino bell'.....is it still there? (and what's the building behind it)

I realize this is quite an exhausting 'survey' of a single photograph....but I was so excited to find this photo I couldn't resist.

The internet never ceases to give up unexpected treasures. Life is good.

Some time ago we had a nice run of posts featuring pictographic maps of Los Angeles. I don't recall this 1942 map by Jo Mora having been included. (But I could be wrong!)

[source: californios.us]

Three detailed views:

Mora's densely illustrated map also includes a great deal of early Los Angeles history:

Someone recently persuaded the Jo Mora Trust to republish this incredible map, in a limited edition of 250 lithographic prints. It's now available at the Los Angeles Central Library Store. One can also order it online from the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, although they currently seem to be out of stock. (I have no connection to the library or the Jo Mora Trust...just thought some of you might be interested in the temporary availability of this map!)

Wrigley Field's opening in 1925, a full year before the Cub's stadium in Chicago changed its name to "Wrigley Field".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wr...ng_Day_LOW.jpg

In 1925, the Angels moved from their former home at Washington Park (which was also known as Chutes Park) to the brand new Wrigley Field in South Los Angeles, on the block bordered by 41st Place to the north, South San Pedro Street to the west, 42nd Place to the south, and Avalon Blvd to the east. (Speaking of Avalon, at that same time Mr Wrigley also owned Santa Catalina Island, and the Chicago Cubs were holding their spring training in that island's city of Avalon, whose ballfield was located on Avalon Canyon Road and was also known as "Wrigley Field.")

Left Field - 340 ft, Left Center Field - 345 ft, Center Field - 412 ft, Right Center Field - 345 ft, Right Field - 339 ft, Backstop - 56 ft. Capacity was 22,000 seats.

The Angels played at Wrigley Field until 1957. The park was closed in 1965 and demolished in 1966. The site is now occupied by the recreation facility called Gilbert Lindsay Park which was originally the parking lot. The park has a ballfield in the northwest corner of the property. The original site of the Wrigley diamond and grandstand is occupied by the Kedren Community Mental Health Center and parking lot.
