Okay, I'm going to need some pictures of this as proof. Someone go downtown and have a good time and in doing so meander on over to this empty lot and snap some pics.

This is what parking lot attendant said just now when I asked him when the hotel will start. He said he spoke with the engineer on the project 3 weeks ago and they said May is when the project would start. He said the owner is still trying to obtain necessary financing or something along those lines. I asked why was the fence put up recently, he shrugged and said, I don't know. I don't know how accurate this information is, but I thought I'd relay it to you all.

Yeah, I'm near the site now and there's a crew adding sandbags to the fencing but I'm not calling anything until I see the cars cleared out

I am afraid it might be for sxsw. The tarp over the fence that was just put up looks similar to last years set up.

Hope this isn't the case. :/

I walked by this morning also and there was a sign on the fence that said "Hard Hat Area" which sounds like construction to me.

Y'know, I really can't wait for all the memes to be posted when this officially breaks ground. It's gonna be scurry.

That's an interesting post ahealy. I'm so 2014 unsavvy, I had to google a definition for memes and "its gonna be scurry". Now that I'm hip to your lingo, I agree, news of the groundbreaking will definately cause a forumgasm of responses.

I was so excited today to be able to confirm the fence that I decided to delurk for the express purpose of doing so. Then I realized, damn, that fence looks skeevy. I agree, it's probably SXSW related. No way is something so temporary related to a multiple year project unless (and this is skyscraper nerd hope talking here) it's just preliminary until they get the sidewalk covers built.

Thanks for delurking and checking this out and potentially dashing our hopes...

Fence looks very temporary. It is not anchored to the ground. The fence posts actually have feet that extend out to make them stand up. The whole run of fencing along Cesar Chavez was blown over by the wind and laying on the sidewalk on Sunday afternoon. More will be revealed one of these days. Somebody should ask the Manchester folks.

Any ideas as to why projects in the southeast area of DT have much trouble getting built..If it is within a 5 iron shot of the corner at Chavez and Red River, it seems to take forever to happen...

Hotels abound downtown, but what about the Fairmont?

On one hand, it’s easy to see why the hotel construction business in Austin is so hot. After all, Austin has not had enough rooms to serve its growing convention and tourism business.

Some more info about the Fairmont......
