I didn't find inner city Rome to be all that dirty. Considering the throngs of people everywhere, the amount of litter wasn't all that bad. When I took a train out to the suburbs to visit my sister, the train went through some districts where people apparently dump all sorts of stuff along the right of way. It was pretty bad. But I loved the historic inner city.
By the way, the suburb where my sister lived looked remarkably like American suburbs. Her apartment complex looked amazingly like any random apartments in our suburbs. The interiors looked that way, too. One thing that was interesting was that the apartment dwellers dried their clothes by hanging them on lines strung across patios or balconies. I don't know if it's that way now or not.
