^ The new store looks amazing. I see that they have hollowed out a skylit atrium to visually connect the floors. Can't wait to see it all completed. The street front windows have also been totally redone, not to mention the entire facade of the building has been cleaned & restored. Really this is a major win for The Core and DT Calgary.

Next up - Saks Fifth Avenue @ Chinook!

Calgary getting another saks off 5th

Quote:
In 2018, Saks OFF 5TH will open stores in suburban Toronto and Calgary, both within Cadillac Fairview-managed shopping centres. A 27,000 square foot Saks OFF 5TH will open at CF Markville centre in Markham, north of Toronto, and a 26,600 square foot location will open at Calgary’s CF Market Mall next year, as well.

Am I the only one really disappointed with Off 5th? I find the product offering not much different than Winners, except that Off 5th isn't as cramped and the racks aren't as over-stuffed. I would have thought they'd be more like a Century 21 in NYC, based on what the parent Saks carries.

I am with you. The racks aren't overstuffed because they sell a high end product and aren't really willing to drastically reduce the price. The product offerings are good but the price point is actually quite high still. Give me a Nordstrom Rack any day over this.

Actually, what Off 5th carries isn't nearly high-end. Virtually everything in their business wear is Saks-branded, and most casual stuff they carry you could find at a Winners. That's why I mentioned Century 21. They carry high-end product that we'd otherwise find at places like Holt Renfrew or Harry Rosen. Off 5th is much closer to Winners.

last time i went there when it first opened in BC it was a lot of high end but like i wondered if you are a customer who can afford a $3000 prada bag from saks off 5th would you really pay that for last seasons bag?

they had a lot of stuff from moncler when i was there, moncler running shoes for about $500. The marshalls also had some moncler running shoes in a different colour for the same price, and harry rosen outlet also had some moncler shoes different style for around $600.

It seems a lot of what they sell is stuff that is brought from the regular store and than they use a lot of filler that goes on the sale racks. My friend got some nudie jeans for $28. They are usually well over $150 in most stores for that brand.

The GF and I went to the Simons opening.

The store is beautiful, however it felt a bit small.

The layout is pretty cool. I'm sure working with the bones of an older building was quite the challenge.

What's happening with the Concorde/Sears redevelopment plan for North Hill Makl? Also is Northland Village Mall proceeding with their redevelopment despite Whole Foods' decision to vacate the project?

My understanding is that sears has an ownership position in North Hill Mall, so that is one of the reasons Sears is keeping the location open during CCAA.

WRT Northland Village, family friends just least a space in the Mall, so i'm going to assume the economic downturn has put redevelopment plans on ice. Additionally, of the four redevelopment plans in the area (Dalhousie and Northland combined), Northland is the most in jeopardy as it is not as further along as the others.

Northland is the one that is furthest along, as it has approved DPs, where as no other project does that I can think of. The Co-Ops seem to have gone cold from what I have heard (won't be scheduled to Council for land use anytime soon at least), and there is no DP submission for the large land use next to Dalhousie.

Not sure if mentioned here already but I got an email earlier today indicating that Henry Singer is relocating from Bankers Hall to Eighth Avenue Place. I didn't realize that Eighth Avenue had much of a retail component.

London Drugs unveils LDExpress, a new smaller format store
JUNE 28, 2017 | BY MICHAEL JOHNSEN

CALGARY, Alberta — London Drugs on Monday opened a the first LDEXPRESS here, a "grab-and-go" retail store with 4,000 square feet of selling space that includes a full-service pharmacy, two customer service specialist desks and full-service ship-to-store pick up for everything available through the company's ecommerce site.

"LDEXPRESS is here to cater to customers who are time-starved but who also desire high-quality products and personalized customer care which they know they can count on from London Drugs," stated Clint Mahlman, EVP and COO, London Drugs. "This store is built entirely around the customer," he said. "LDEXPRESS features products and sevice offerings dedicated to making our customers' lives easier. This store is all about convenience."

...

In addition to the pharmacy, the smaller footprint showcases cosmetics and dermatology products, small housewares and office supplies, high-tech accessories, a photo kiosk and food to-go from Spolumbo's find foods and deli.

it was in a report about the HBC sales report earlier this year that they admitted to making a mistake and a reason for a downturn in sales. They brought in lower priced, lower end brands to their Saks off 5th locations and have realized its not what consumers wanted and are going to bring back the higher end brands they have been known for in the remainder of 2017 and into 2018. I have found the prices ok, the sales prices are quite cheap.

Perhaps while obviously highly unequal, Calgary's wealthy population is proportionally much larger so many gentrifying projects sail through with broader public support than somewhere with a more typical distribution of much more low-income households that get adversely affected
Your post may actually provide the answer. Calgarians are a very positive (boisterous) bunch. There's not much to debate over gentrification when all is always good. Naw, you're probably right. It's because everyone is still a top income earner ( for the time being post boom.)

In Calgary you're displacing upper middle class for the most part when you're redeveloping, or it is SFHs where the landlord is very upfront of the limitations of the lease given the nature of the real estate.

Except for that townhouse redevelopment near Dalhousie.

Also when close to 70% of households own you have a different dynamic.
