Edmonton Audiophile Thread

This thread is not about pimping your flat with that really funny cable so you can squeeze out that mystical bi-directional forcing wave action into your AD/DA converters, but for places around the city that have good, awesome or excellent acoustics and which place is no better than a dog barking in an oil drum. That kind of audiophilia.

So what have you on offer?

For enjoying sound art (theatre, music, dance.)

Live or canned.

For example, I don't know if this troupe is still around but if you wanted to go to a rave with excellent acoustics, GOMP parties were difficult to beat. It sounded loud but you knew the sound was good when you are also holding a conversation with somebody three metres away from you and none of you are shouting. The Rugby Hall by Kingsway seemed to be most conducive for this, for some strange reason.

I know the type of venue you describe. I've done just that on a micro scale in my audio space in the basement of my house.

I'll have to think about that a bit, but I know I have found locations like you are looking for

Sonic Boom is moving their little thing to Borden Park.

Didn't know that. Residents are now worried about the sound.

Dead Venues film recalls Edmonton’s lost, lamented clubs

By Sandra Sperounes, Edmonton Journal May 6, 2015 3:07 PM

A gig poster from New City for the Dead Venues project.

Preview

Dead Venues

With: Post-film performance by Jr. Gone Wild

Part of: Global Visions Film Festival

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Where: Metro Cinema, 8712 109th St.

Tickets: $15 plus service charges via globalvisionsfestival.com

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, The Ambassador Hotel was home to one of Edmonton’s sketchiest dives.

The Ambo, as it was usually called, featured a low ceiling, crappy sight lines (thanks to a few posts lining the dance floor), lax ID policies, and a cranky waiter with missing fingers.

The basement venue, located on 106th Street, was also one of the best places to see touring and local punk and alternative acts: Descendents, Tupelo Chain Sex, Mojo Nixon, Neurosis, Big Drill Car, Edmonton’s Jr. Gone Wild, Unsound, and Idyl Tea...

Checked out Joel Plaskett and Union Hall on Saturday. I have to admit that I've never been to the Union or any of the previous clubs in that building. Great little venue for a crowd that size.....terrible getting a cab after though.

Seems like a few shows are being hosted at Union this spring....which surprised me.

The cab is not a problem for me with the Union Hall. Just haven't seen any shows that pique my interest there.

I'm the opposite! I used to go to when it used to be Goose Loonies and Thunderdome but never been to it as Union Hall.

So I've heard Stang Guitars has opened on 76th Avenue and 99th Street. From the photos I've seen, it has a pretty sweet interior. Will be checking it out later this week.

Union Hall is now strictly an event centre.

Speaking of which, does anyone remember a couple years back when EEC closed and the owners had said they hoped to have a new venue of similar size open somewhere else in the spring of '14? Any idea what happened with that?

The only buses I know that go by that location is the rush-hour 122 and 126. Won't be going to this often.

Came out of the Winspear from the last ESO concert of the season ( Weil and Gershwin), sat and listen to the Braids and Purity Ring for a while after. 2 great concerts.
