"Phone booth and Newsstand late 1950s. Los Angeles" designed by Henry Dreyfuss

from Industrial Design, volume 5, 1959

Does anyone recall this design, or was it just a temporary prototype? The street corner looks to be somewhere in the Civic Center.

I like the little awning over the newsstand.

Using Wig-Wag's instructions, and following the train on it's journey, I located another building.

screen-grab / Columbia Pictures 1946

Here it is in 2011. The address is 5246-5238 San Fernando Road.

gsv

Recently it's had an insensitive remodel.

Today

The doors and windows at street level are a big improvement, but the bricks have been covered up (hate that!), and the area with the horizontal diamond pattern
has been covered over.

The paint job is regrettable.

I don't know why Werdin is gated (?)

The Edison Building is still there:

A word on the Venice Hotel. It still houses LA's oldest bathhouse, since 1905 (or there abouts):

"Turkish & Electric Baths (now KLYT) – 132 E. 4th Street LA, CA 90013
If it’s more dirt that you’re looking for, walk down to LA’s oldest bathhouse that still operates today and has hosted many a closeted movie star. Most men only bathed once a month at the turn of the century. LA never funded public bathhouses, so the private sector swung into action. You can still see the broken neon sign proclaiming BATHS high above the doorway."

Hotel (west entrance) and Baths (east door) and some once-was neon:

I saw the post and Edison Electric Substation #2 was mentioned but no picture. I hope this helps as far as where it was.
I hope I'm doing this right, sorry if it's not I'm forum retarded as ethereal reality can tell you.

Very interesting photograph Hollywood Girl. I quickly perused the #2 substations in the So. Cal. Edison Collection
at the Huntington Archive and couldn't find any that matched it.

I like how the lot is slightly raised. -but I wasn't able to figure out the location (there have been numerous St Pauls in the Los Angeles area).

I was obliquely referencing MichaelRyerson's excellent post on the block of Werdin Alley between 4th and 5th Streets (I should have linked to it). Your photo opens up questions. More investigation is needed to sort it out.

The building is still there, but this corner of Broadway is looking a bit tatty. A fresh coat of paint would go a long way to helping the old Lerner Shops store, but I don't understand why only the lower third of the building to the right was clad in mirrored glass.

Follow-up lives on, anyway!

There's this image of the 749 S. Broadway building before its mid-century makeover.

here's another that I'd cropped from someplace, without the signage covering the top floor.

Aren't most of the alley's of downtown LA gated to keep ''someone'' out of them....probably the itinerants who now throng the area in large numbers.

'mystery' location

eBay

It wouldn't be a mystery if I could only read the street signs....but they're just too darn small.

I just noticed a motorcycle getting ready to pull out into the street.

Thanks for finding the location of St Pauls School GW.

I see a faintly legible street sign at far left under traffic light. Building has partially visible signage too. "Pasadena" is on Freeway sign. Maybe Hollywood at top. Plymouth Fury? and Anglia?

There's a man inside the street car with a movie camera.

I want that film!

Today's Julius Shulman post has the location in the description. This is Western Federal Savings on the corner of Prospect Avenue and N Vermont Avenue. It's "Job 5228: Sidney Eisenshtat, Western Federal Savings (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1975".
NB. The two pictures in the set are virtually identical, so I just picked one.

Getty Research Institute

The building is now shared between US Bank and Starbucks. Note how the steps have been replaced by a ramp.

GSV

This area appears very briefly in the 2000 Dukes of Hazzard TV movie 'Hazzard in Hollywood'. I won't go into the complex plotline (), but in this scene the Duke Boys are escaping from the bad guys when they swerve into a bikini car wash at Prospect and Vermont. At the time of filming, the bank building was empty. I've just noticed the people watching at the far left.

Warner Bros

Looking the other way, we get a quick glimpse of Orange Bee Jay's at 1670 N Vermont. It appears in the 1987 CD.

Warner Bros

Orange Bee Jay's is now Machos Tacos. There's also a real car wash next door. The 1987 CD lists it as the Hollymont Car Wash and Auto Repair Center. It now seems to be called Vermont Handwash, and has some pretty scathing reviews on yelp.com.

There was really a place named Orange Bee Jay?

Yellow Cab driver striking a pose during training on Western Avenue, Los Angeles, 1926.

When I first saw this photograph I thought it was our man Rood.

I was hoping to see a name tag.

below: I don't think he's taking his training too seriously.

What's he reading?

Artists and Models, June 1926

Now it's his turn to drive -and he pulls out right in front of somebody.

below: I couldn't help but notice the interesting building in the background. I believe it's part of the school; probably the gymnasium.

I think the ladies were standing on top of the 1926 Orpheum Theatre at 842 South Broadway, with the camera looking towards the corner of 8th and Spring. The Orpheum is twelve stories high, so the roof would be the thirteenth. I recreated the photograph in the view below by using the roof of the Platt Building at 834 South Broadway as the viewpoint. It wasn't finished until 1927, so can't be the location in the vintage picture, but it now blocks the view from the Orpheum.

Google Earth

Here's the photo and caption in the July 2, 1926 edition of the Santa Cruz Evening News. There's no accompanying story.
