Recently it's had an insensitive remodel.

The doors and windows at street level are a big improvement, but the bricks have been covered up (hate that!), and the area with the horizontal diamond pattern
has been covered over.

The paint job is regrettable.

I was obliquely referencing MichaelRyerson's excellent post on the block of Werdin Alley between 4th and 5th Streets (I should have linked to it). Your photo opens up questions. More investigation is needed to sort it out.

The building is still there, but this corner of Broadway is looking a bit tatty. A fresh coat of paint would go a long way to helping the old Lerner Shops store, but I don't understand why only the lower third of the building to the right was clad in mirrored glass.

The school was at 1908 S Bronson from 1922 to 1962-- now a parking lot.

Today's Julius Shulman post has the location in the description. This is Western Federal Savings on the corner of Prospect Avenue and N Vermont Avenue. It's "Job 5228: Sidney Eisenshtat, Western Federal Savings (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1975".
NB. The two pictures in the set are virtually identical, so I just picked one.

This area appears very briefly in the 2000 Dukes of Hazzard TV movie 'Hazzard in Hollywood'. I won't go into the complex plotline (), but in this scene the Duke Boys are escaping from the bad guys when they swerve into a bikini car wash at Prospect and Vermont. At the time of filming, the bank building was empty. I've just noticed the people watching at the far left.

Looking the other way, we get a quick glimpse of Orange Bee Jay's at 1670 N Vermont. It appears in the 1987 CD.

Orange Bee Jay's is now Machos Tacos. There's also a real car wash next door. The 1987 CD lists it as the Hollymont Car Wash and Auto Repair Center. It now seems to be called Vermont Handwash, and has some pretty scathing reviews on yelp.com.

I think the ladies were standing on top of the 1926 Orpheum Theatre at 842 South Broadway, with the camera looking towards the corner of 8th and Spring. The Orpheum is twelve stories high, so the roof would be the thirteenth. I recreated the photograph in the view below by using the roof of the Platt Building at 834 South Broadway as the viewpoint. It wasn't finished until 1927, so can't be the location in the vintage picture, but it now blocks the view from the Orpheum.
