New Haven, Connecticut

My collection of photos from New Haven.

The city is the second-largest city in Connecticut and the sixth-largest in New England. The 2010 census puts the city's population at about 129,779 New Haven is the principal municipality in the Greater New Haven metropolitan area, which had a total population of 571,310 in 2000.

New Haven was founded in 1638, and a year later eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid, creating what is now commonly known as the "Nine Square Plan," now recognized by the American Institute of Certified Planners as a National Historic Planning Landmark. The central common block is New Haven Green a 16-acre (6 ha) square, now a National Historic Landmark and the center of Downtown New Haven.

New Haven is also a major college town (as you may know). The city is home to Yale University, Gateway Community College, Albertus Magnus College, and the University of New Haven. Neighborhing Hamden is home to Quinnipiac University and neighboring West Haven is home to the University of New Haven.

Now despite what some may think New Haven is a great city and Yale University has done wonders to help turn this city around.

Enjoy!

An excellent tour. It looks much nicer than its reputation.

New Haven seems to be doing quite well. I saw Jethro Tull at the colliseum back in the 70's. Not the best acoustics, and the cops took half of my friend's weed, but we had a good time. Great mix of old and new structures, something you'd expect from most towns in the Northeast. You captured them well. The New Haven Omni is ugly.

Awesome thread, I like Hartford. I use to visit the city every now and then when I had family there. I still do go but not often, but usually while on one of the jobs.

Louis Lunch ? Isn't that the spot that makes those unique steam burgers ?

Lois Lunch is the hamburger place. They claim to be the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich. And I will say it is worth the trip!

And as to Hartford I have to say I love Hartford. Hartford is the city I grew up around and so I know the ins and outs of all there is Hartford so I will always love Hartford more but with that in mind, these photos show that New Haven is still an awesome little city.

Yale has some beautiful architecture.

That Knights of columbus building looks like he's a douche though.

In my 20's my dad on a trip to NYC via Boston had the wherewithal to take me to Louis Lunch. How he knew of the place I had no idea. While there I had a delicious lunch of these delicious burgers served with Potato Salad. The most fabulous Potato Salad I had in my life. They cooked them in this fancy contraption and my Dad knew all about it. On subsequent trips we go to Wooster Square and get Sals Apizza. 1 for there, 1 for mom back home, and 1 for the trip. Clam, onion, and bacon. Pepperoni and Onion half baked. And Mushroom Sausage onion half baked. Tony and Lucille s for Gardiniera and Provolone.

Great pictures! I think New Haven is one of the most underrated cities in America, it's like a smaller Boston.
Btw, nice to spot Swedish influence in these pics: a vintage Volvo 240 and an IKEA store!

NH is a stunning city with extraordinary architecture and great cultural amenities thanks to Yale. Further, it is 75 miles from Manhattan, 125 miles from Boston, and it has nice beaches not to far away.
