Vine Street School does face east on Vine Street, between Romaine and Willoughby.

Sorry if I was confusing. This cold is making me stupid. I actually couldn't remember how to turn bread into toast this morning, until I thought about it for a minute.

It's so great that the Demille Barn has survived. If I remember correctly, it's now over by the Hollywood Bowl.
I am sure we covered it's relocation in the early pages of NLA....but I haven't found the posts yet.

This is by far the earliest photograph I've seen of this movie actress.

Does anyone recognize her?

Thank you Hoss for the added street names. This is how the land looks today.

The Jade

Here is a photo of The Jade from Ebay:

"Understated" does not seem to be the right word for it.

I have found out a little bit about this place from an unexpected source: the "General Crime Survey: Los Angeles" issued by the FBI on April 15, 1945. It described Larry Potter as a suspected murderer who had left Utah when it got too hot for him during Prohibition, and ended up in Los Angeles as a front man for dubious night clubs. One of these was The Jade at 6619 Hollywood Boulevard.

The FBI stated that the license to operate the "Jade" was issued to Paul Kalmanowitz and Nathan Sherry, ex-NY cop and some-time pal of Mickey Cohen. The Jade, says the FBI, has "the reputation with Los Angeles vice officers as being a hang out for homosexuals. It had the same reputation with military and naval authorities."

The FBI went on to say that 10 years ago [1935] Paul Kalmanowitz worked as a car parker at the 12th street garage. He saved a little money and bought into an eating establishment known as "Jerry's Joint" [! - we have seen this place before in NLA as "Jerry's Joynt"] in Chinatown. The agent said that Kalmanowitz is the type of person who always makes money, that he has a cheerful, pleasant personality.

I will try to write some more about the Jade and its denizens, if people are interested.
Hello Lorendoc. I've tried contacting you privately and as of yet have not received a response. I am hoping that this message is able to find you. I am assisting an author who has a small section in his book about the Jade and Larry Potter. He would love to include the information you found in the "General Crime Survey: Los Angeles" issued by the FBI on April 15, 1945. He would also be very interested in any further information the report might contain. Please let me know if you'd be able to assist us in citing this information.

Yep, you are correct t2. It's ZaSu Pitts, the "girl with the ginger snap name".

Here's how she is described in 1920.

The actual title is "Who's Who on the Screen" (instead of "Who's Who in Hollywood")

Since I don't know downtown Pasadena all that well I'll label this....

'mystery' intersection, Pasadena.

eBay

The first thing I noticed was the flashy gold T-Bird in front of that divey looking place that resembles something out of a film noir.

detail

below: I've tried to read the name of the place, but just can't make it out.

xtra-close up

That red VW van is also pretty snazzy.

-note the Table Tennis Center up a flight of stairs next door. (that's a bit noirishy as well )

Mack Sennet Studios

Wow, thanks e_r for the link:

There's a good image of the Mack Sennett Studios in there somewhere.

A nice, if minor, addenda to your outstanding post on the studio on the triangle of land at Effie, Bates and Fountain. I love how the Hathitrust image shows the lay of the land.

The picture was taken from the intersection of E Green Street and S Raymond Avenue.

Many of the buildings on Raymond Avenue are still standing.

These are just across Colorado Boulevard.

Here's another photo taken at the same time as e_r's original shot.

Thanks Hoss, you work fast! That Vandervort Building is an absolute stunner.

t2, you beat me to it. I was going to post the Mack Sennett photographs next. (from Who's Who on the Screen, 1920)

Here is a larger view that shows both sides of the photograph.

Like you said t2, I love how it shows the lay of the land. If you look closely, there are nice-sized houses behind that row of trees on the left.
-and i'm intrigued by the white "tower" to the left of Mr. Sennett's oval photograph.

I'm talking about this "tower" (at first I thought it was on the far side of that road, but now I'm not so sure)

That looks like it was a much bigger facility than the remnant that's left

I don't believe this is the same location t2.

The above aerial is of the old Mabel Normand Film Company. Confusingly, it has been renamed the Mack Sennett Studios for marketing purposes.
It was built by Mack Sennett for his paramour and star Ms. Normand, thus the connection.

OK, I finally found a clear explanation. (apparently others have been confused, like the Mayor of Los Angeles in 2013)
