I also came across this 1947 newspaper article.

So, I don't know if it was ever a 'courthouse' per say, but there was a courtroom upstairs at one point in time.

And here's a glimpse upstairs.

Today it is known as the Gardena Dance Studio.

I bet the vintage light fixtures date from it's days as a courtroom. -it's so cool that they're still there!

I also like the rounded corners of the room.

Whoa- it does look nice. The letters seem to have so much dimension. My vintage cars have their original plates but maybe I *need* one for my modern.

When I was researching 1926 awhile back, I came across this article about the auto display in the Arcade building, dated July 11 (LA Times). Apparently, people liked it.

Poor Winslow Felix, though, only had 10 more years to live. He had an accident during a polo game at the Riviera Country Club and died, May 31, 1936.

Yep, he collided with Reginald "Snowy" Baker. Poor Mr. Felix was only 42.

Here's "Snowy" in his prime, around 1908.

OK, Noirish sleuths:

This is 12330 & 12340 Santa Monica Blvd in West LA. The modern glass building is really just a modern glass facade in front of an old building.

Does anyone have pictures of the original building with the original facade?

(GSV, hosted by me)

Thanks.

ER, You're welcome, I'm happy to point out such an interesting building. I had done some searching and was surprised how little information comes up. It is very difficult to find a vintage photo. The black and white one shown here is only a few years old. It shows different tenants downstairs but they were both there just a couple of years ago. Good find on the interior photos and thanks for confirming my recollection that the building had once served as a courtroom. The current Gardena Dance Studio is also low profile as it is also hard to find information on it. I'm starting to think this building is stuck in some sort of time warp.

There is another intriguing building near by that I will photograph myself and post in the near future.

Very interesting indeed!
Here is a more straight on shot of the building. It looks like it could be the same as in the small image, kind of hard to tell. Anyway, this is the building that was a bar up until 15-20 years ago when it became the home of the Okinawa Association. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the bar from back then.

Marlene Dietrich's house at 913 North Bedford Drive

913 North Bedford Drive, a 1926 Spanish Revival mansion owned by Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel’s pal Countess Di Frasso and had Marlene Dietrich for a tenant. MLS photos are from its listing on Zillow, where there are more, and details of the listing:

Some of the 1935 interior decor by Elsie De Wolfe is still intact.

Marlene rented it while Siegel and di Frasso were away on one of their notorious trips together.

Was there a name change after it was "The Bank Club"? Apparently that was the name from the 30s until at least 1985.

A rare photograph showing the Montezuma Saloon. (1890s? 1900s?)

old file of mine/prob. from eBay

I located the saloon in the 1900-1901 city directory.

lapl

That address places the Montezuma Saloon along this stretch of N. Los Angeles Street.

gsv

Could it have been in that shorter building to the right of the 1890 Garnier Building?
_______

A year ago , HossC spotted a Montezuma Inn at the intersection of Figueroa, Flower and Temple.

While searching for the Montezuma Saloon, I came across this photograph showing that stretch of N. Los Angeles Street in 1938.
(many years after the saloon, but an interesting photograph none the less)

The new "old" plates are supposed to have reflective yellow paint, that's how you can tell the difference with an actual vintage plate.

I've been seeing them here and there on some cars, mainly older cars, but some retro-styled new cars as well, like Mustangs and Chargers. I like the way they look, I wouldn't mind if they made this the standard California plate.

I'm wondering how they'd look on my MINI Cooper...

Regarding the demise of MayCo's parking structure, I do not have any exact date but would guess it was gone at least two decades ago. I previously posted incomplete recollections of the gas station at the SE corner.

Funny thing is some people have been altering modern plates and painting them black and yellow for years. Obviously this does not comply with the vehicle code. The giveaway (at least up until now) was a sequence that is something other than 3 letters followed by 3 numbers.
I fought the DMV for years to be able to put the original black plates back on my '63 Caddy and was finally able to when they changed a law a few years ago. The car now proudly displays its original plates and looks complete.

The Montezuma Saloon must have been in the old firehouse on the Plaza. Look at the roofine above the "A" of Montezuma and compare it to the part I've circled below. That also ties in with the street numbering on the 1910 Baist map.

GSV

The firehouse was built in 1884, but only operated as a firehouse until 1897, so this narrows down our window for the Montezuma Saloon picture. Here's a slightly later picture from an earlier post.

Thanks Tv2. I had no idea what street that was or is. I tried to look for it on the Movie Locations site but could not find it.

Secondarily, Dean's Merc car is considered one of the all time iconic movie cars.
