I decided to take a trip on the subway and visit downtown on the last day of 2006. If I weren't so lazy I would try and figure out how to take better pictures at dusk. Oh well! LA is alive, raw, edgy, diverse and beautiful. Enjoy!
Great job on the photos! I love the area of DT East of Pershing Square, lots of density and good old fashion urbanism over there. How did you like the ice skating? My fiance and I tried it out, pretty rough ice and skates!
The Historic Core doesn't need much to become on par with areas of NYC and San Francisco. All that area needs is better retail, improved streets and sidewalks, removal of the excessive signage, restoration of the facades, and the conversion of the buildings to residential units.

I didn't have the opportunity to ice skate LAsam but it was nice to see people actually utilizing Pershing Square. The last time I was downtown they had Pershing Square closed off and many disappointed people.
So many of those buildings in the historic core are getting some TLC, which is wonderful.
A few other of my Downtown LA photos from 2006:

I personally think that Downtown LA is one of the most beautifully set dowtowns around!!!... but it just drives me nuts that it is such a dead city. During the week it is bustling with people but only because they have to work there. Every time i have been downtown on the weekends its dead!!! (except for the shopping districts) but in my opinion there is really nothing to do down there and its depressing. Wish there was more life. But none the less those are some great shots of some beautiful buildings!!!!

Thanks for the comments on the pictures but what makes downtown boring? There's shopping (2 malls with a Macy's and all the other shopping districts if that's your idea of fun). Every time I go downtown there are people all over in the jewelry district, down broadway, olivera st, little tokyo, etc. There are plenty of restaurants and clubs... I love the Mayan.. had a great time there last Saturday night. What would you like to see? The more pedestrian LA Live will be there soon enough for those who like a watered down controlled environment. You got the Disney Concert Hall, museums like MOCA and the Staples Center for concerts and games. The only place on the weekends that is "dead" is the CBD with the shinny skyscrapers, which is where most people venture who are put off by LA's diversity and edginess. IMO it's very entertaining and only getting better and more diverse.

I feel what your saying about Downtown, it is improving and with the LA Live project there will be a lot more pedestrian activity!! I do however realize that Downtown LA has a long way to go......I took a recent trip to San Francisco and was amazed at the amount of Life in the Downtown area. There were people all over the streets at all times of the day. Union Square is like having a huge shopping mall in the middle of downtown, almost every designer and major department store was present!!! The streets were kept amazingly clean at all times.. the night life was exciting and had everything ranging from bars to clubs to restaurants. The land scaping with the trees and choice in street lights almost gave a very old village feel to a large city.....Another thing I observed was the amount of buildings that there downtown had. A much larger number than LA, granted all of them weren't as tall but there were so many that it had a New York feel to it!!! Simply put, that is the way a downtown should feel!!!
As I said earlier, the area with all the older buildings (Historic Core) will easily be on par with SF, Chicago, and NYC. Believe me. Certainly in population density as well. That area already has that established, urban look to it. I really do believe that LA will be on par with SF in 10 years.
