Your Best Shots of 2012

Another year, another 'best of thread'. See the one for 2011 here.

If this is anything like last time, people probably won't just post one. So let's see your best shots from 2012.

Some of mine:

Havana

Dalian

Beijing

Li River

Kashmir

Srinagar

Delhi

Amristar

Leh

Here's to a great 2013!

I didn't take as many pictures as I have in previous years because I have a little less time to travel. But, I got an underwater camera to use on a trip to Florida at the end of 2011, and I played around with an idea in my head to get some pictures that were half underwater and half above water. It was tough, but the conditions were just right one evening when I was up in Ontario visiting my grandparents at their cottage on Lake Erie, just west of Buffalo. I have several pictures from that evening that I hope to get around to posting, but this one was the money shot. This is far and away the picture that I remember from 2012, and one that is up there as maybe my all-time greatest.

^ so that's the sand under the water? Crazy, almost looks furrows of wheat that haze into ice. Very surreal.

I didn't take as many photos in 2012 as I did in 2011, but this was the year where my style really diversified. I have a deep emotional connection to the beach, and to a greater extent, California as a whole. Returning home for the summer after a year in Portland gave me three months to reconnect with the great state I call home. I took a few really good photos this year, but out of all of them, I would say this is hands down the best:

The California Coast by C.M. Keiner, on Flickr

I haven't taken any photo that has so completely captured not just a scene or a feeling, but an entire idea, a whole state of mind and existence. That one photo is California, and it's the photo I'm most proud of this year.

.

I just about managed to avoid emigration to Austrailia in 2012 unlike everyone
that I know but I was happy enough to get loads of time with the camera.

Yes, and those ripples are about one inch high/wide. That is how the photo came out from my memory card; there's no editing at all on that. If I had a better camera, I bet I could do even better, but the concept of showing two "worlds" in one picture is interesting in and of itself.

Not my best year for photography as I didn't travel anywhere (for the first year in a very long time). Just a few I like from 2012.

Goddamn, those are some incredible photos!

While I have nowhere near the amazing shots of many of you, here are some of my favorites from this year!

Some of the shots on this thread are unreal. I didn't have time to do nearly as much photography as I would have liked this year but this is the best of what I got:

Blargghhhh...I honestly feel as though my photography is regressing rather than improving. Didn't shoot a whole lot this year that I am entirely proud of.

If we use popularity as a metric this shot is probably my best, was very popular on flickr:

It's a five image pano...click through to see full sized. Rather a fluke I got the shot at all. It was taken on a Friday, when I usually work. I found out the night before I would have the day off, and for whatever reason I decided I had to get up early...sure enough when I woke there was this incredible fog covering the river valley so I ran outside and blasted off a few frames. This kind of fog is very rare in Edmonton.

And a few personal favourites:

I agree Darren, photography is so subjective.

I would probably just post 100 pictures of my son, though no one else would really care.

Here are a few random gems over the past 12 months that were pretty popular on flickr too.

Great pictures by everyone so far! These are certainly the best of 2012.

Here's some more from that half-over-half-underwater set of pictures. Now that I look at them, some of the others are really good, too. I plan on continuing to experiment with the concept of land and sea in the future.
