It was always orange (and green) as long as I can remember. At least from 1947-48. I remember my mother complaining about the color scheme although it never occurred to me it looked bad (I have no taste).

I believe the woman is Norma Shearer.

It's pretty amazing that this box has survived after all these years. Someone must have really treasured it.

Two things. First, I think he's turning someone's water on or off. And secondly, he's riding around town on a really cool Cushman.

A minor correction on the museum. It is located on Highway 1 in the town of Guadalupe, about 9 Miles from Nipomo where I live. See:

http://dunescenter.org/visit-the-dunes/dunes-center/

And:

http://narmassociation.org/guadalupe...o-dunes-center

If you are planning a visit please note that the museum is housed in a former residence on the west side of Guadalupe Street (Highway 1) which is the main street of Guadalupe. and the identifying sign can be easily missed. The second website has a photo of the museum building.

Cheers,
Jack

I hope he is not turning off the water to the Southern Pacific/Pacific Electric Compton Station.

I used to ride the PE Blimps (see the interurban car peeking out from behind the station) down to Long Beach to visit my aunt, and I can still hear the conductor calling out the stop as "Caaaaaaammmpton. Compton Station!"

Cheers,
Jack

Right, Sorry. I was putting it down off the top of my head. The old house where the museum is located is pretty cool as well

That museum sounds really cool. Thanks for the links and info. Wig-Wag and oldstuff.

The seller says...
"This is a photograph of a 1937 Ford patrol car with a Los Angeles Police officer and a California Highway Patrol officer."

ebay

What caught my eye is how one of the officers is filming the altercation/accident, while the poor victim is pointing here and there.

I just don't know for sure but you could be correct ER.....Norma Shearer, such a darling....very romantic and dangerous. Maybe some candy will make her sweet...

She had a handsome brother, Douglas Shearer, who was a sound engineer at MGM. I don't know too much about him. His body donated to medical science
Specifically: Body was donated to UCLA medical school. He was married but without issue.

I never knew Norma Shearer had such a nice looking brother. What does "He was married without issue" mean?

"IBM office employees, Los Angeles." (no date)

Nice wingtips mister!

I thought it would be fun to try and locate this office by using the clues outside the window.

The large rooftop sign in the distance is a bit hard to read. -is it HOTEL something-rama?
...and there's also the painted sign in the lower right corner of the window. R (maybe)_I E S _L I Z_?

Here's the photographer's stamp on the back of the photograph.

Here's 1354 South Hill Street in 1931. The sign on the door says "H H Obermiller, Electrical Contractor", although contemporary City Directories only list Harry H Obermiller's electrical business at 318 West 9th Street.

USC Digital Library

USC also include this interior picture. The shield decal on the left says they're a member of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, and the sign above the certificates on the back wall says they're an authorized dealer for Telechron springless electric clocks.

USC Digital Library

Normally when the building's still standing I'd say "here it is today", but it's currently painted blue and has a large awning, so I went back to February 2009 for this image. It was also one of the few historic GSV images with the shutters up.

GSV

If Mr Obermiller had looked out of his window, he'd have seen the buildings below. USC have just given this photoset the title "Smog, 1949". The Mercer Hotel at 1347 S Hill Street already looks run down here, but it appears in the City Directories up until 1968. Meanwhile, the Hill Street Market at 1345 appears up until 1973. The brick building on the far left appears to still be standing at 1355 S Hill Street.

USC Digital Library

The buildings above can all be seen in this 1964 aerial.

Detail of picture in USC Digital Library

I'm obviously not going to let the last image go by without mentioning the tower just north of W 14th Place. I assume it was a thinly disguised oil pump. Here's the site today. As well as the "No Smoking" and "Private Property" signs, there's a small notice by the side gate with an emergency contact number for St James Oil. I checked the 1964 CD, and found that the site's immediate neighbor was the Las Vegas Cigar Factory at 1310 S Hill. In hindsight, I wonder whether cigars and flammable substances should've been that close together.

The first Lane-Wells facility was located on 4439 Santa Fe Ave. It served as the company office, manufacturing, and repair facility from 1934 until the next facility was built in 1939 at 5610 South Soto Street. Over the years, an additional California office was opened as well as offices in Houston, and Oklahoma City.

matchbook. I like the archaic graphics.

The doctor is anxiously waiting. -anyone familiar with this hospital?

Excellent color photographs of the Lima Apartments circa 1962 Godzilla. It was certainly looking worse for wear.

Galeria Real in Baltimore Hotel, Los Angeles (10-1-23):
USC Digital Library

Here are current reviews of the hotel:
This place is a GREAT place to hole up for a week and smoke crack like the world is going to end tomorrow! Half of Los Angeles' sex offenders and violent criminals can be found living here -- really great if you need advice on how to construct your very own Fifi towel, how to kill someone with a pair of car keys, or if you're into IVing cheap, sludgy heroin and need tips on how muscle it in even the most abscessed limb.

Entomologists shall delight at the garden of roaches, bedbugs, lice, chiggers and other assorted invertebrates that blanket the walls of this manor. Shag carpets in the hallway are surprisingly clean... but that could be because of all the random carpet farmers you'll see scrounging around down there, at the foot of their doors, picking away to keep them clean. Who needs a vaccuum? Neighbors are friendly, if exuberant -- especially the ladies! -- kicking in your door at 2am, offering companionship at rock bottom prices.

Wow! And the concierge service.... I have never had my keys and ID shoved at me so fast underneath a bulletproof glass window before. What efficiency!

AND the best part is, it's dirt cheap!!! So you can save some money when you walk a few blocks over to your fancy-pants dinner at Cicada. I love Downtown Los Angeles!

Courtney "Skullduggery Tricks" H.

Today:
Google Earth

"This is a 1920's era railroad hotel. Takes long-term weekly renters, like SS recipients, etc. I stayed here a year or two back when. What can I say about skid row? Anyway, a lota old timers. Original architecture hardly visible. They shoot the occasional scene in here. The neighborhood is always part of some cop show shoot. But the place is OK if your willing to wait out the application process..."

"I believe outa all the hotels in skid row this is the most comfortable one. I also think it's has a nice view. Evelyn"

"The place sucks and cockroach infested!"

It means....no natural born children.

I think it may be a legal term used in Court documents....
