Many people have been skeptical, and for a while - for a good reason. In the 90s this area, a brown field, has been cleaned up, and has becomeone big hole in the ground, a big mess with nothing going on. It was becoming a joke of Luzhkov's critics. The time was not yet ripe for this project to take off.

still... anm, do you happen to know, is there really a market for all that class-a office space? i mean, ok, city of 12 or 15 million, yeah, probably, but however much square footage it is, it must be a huge amount to pump into the market. on the other hand, given the booming economy, maybe i'm concerned over nothing. probably still assuming russia is the russia it was in the 90's.
3.5 mln square meters of class A office space

There is a dire lack of class A office space in Moscow; and considering the City will be connected to to internatinal aiports by direct trains (30min to Sheremetjevo, 40 min to Domodedovo) this should be in great demand. Right now offices are scattered all over the city.

I am not an economist, but I can tell you that Russia in the middle of 90s and today are very different, particularly in Moscow.

Quote:
btw are those other buildings in the picture going to be as tall?
As tall and taller.

Many heigts are not final, as they keep changing them even for U/C projects, like for the Naberezhnaja tower C shown above. It had been expected to be 252m when construction began, but now has been increased to 269 m.

Russia Tower 612 m approved
Federation Tower East - 354m, spire 448 m U/C
Mercury Tower 380 m U/C
City Hall 308 m U/C
Eurasia (plot 12) 305 m U/C
Moscow (City of Capitals) 282 (or 268m?) m U/C
Naberezhnaja Tower C 269 m U/C
Plot 16, 275m proposed
Imperia Tower (60 floors) - ca 250 m U/C
St. Petersburg (City of Capitals) 242 m U/C

I guess we should add this parorama by Brad here as well, since it shows the construction of IBC

it has been taken from one of the New Arbat highrises a few days ago and posted today on SCC

a number of close ups from the same point are shown in the European section http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=127519

I did not want to show them here because they do not cover IBC, and this would divert this thread
in the direction of a general Moscow picture thread; but they are good - check them out.

the progress is not striking, at least from this point of view, but it is a new picture

but as evidenced by this photo by igor from May 5, the gap will eventually be filled by a couple of towers
