Given IcelandAir expanded their pdx kef service last year, I doubt they're doing badly. Sometimes there are days when flights have lighter loads for some unknown reason. I took AC YVR HKG in March and it was practically empty, but I know that's unusual. Maybe the same thing happened coincidentally to Icelandair that day.

Portland-area travelers will soon have a second nonstop option for cross-country flights to Disney World and Central Florida.

Sun Country Airlines said Thursday it will add a nonstop flight from Portland International Airport to Orlando International Airport.

The nonstop flight will be available three days a week from June 14 to Aug. 19, according to a company statement. Sun County Airlines, an Eagan, Minnesota-based company, currently operates one nonstop flight from Portland to Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The small airline flies to 40 destinations in the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean.

Alaska Airlines also offers nonstop service from Portland to Orlando, which is a more than five-hour slog.

Sun Country plans to offer flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays during the summer season.

Sun Country Airlines announced the addition of 5 new routes from Portland International Airport, sparking fierce competition with Portland-dominant carrier Alaska Airlines. The routes will include a mix of seasonal flights set to begin in November 2018 and compete with other mainline and low-cost carriers. Sun Country will launch direct, nonstop flights to Honolulu, Las Vegas, Reno/Tahoe, Palm Springs, and Phoenix using their fleet of Boeing 737-700/-800 aircraft. Flights will be operated by four-weekly services, with exceptions being Palm Springs and Reno/Tahoe which will operate on a bi-weekly basis.

Never heard of Sun Country, though those sound like appealing routes to be starting up.

What's the best airport in the U.S.? Spoiler: It's PDX -- again
By The Oregonian/OregonLive | Posted July 10, 2018 at 10:50 AM | Updated July 10, 2018 at 11:25 AM

All we do is win.

Travel + Leisure on Tuesday named Portland International Airport its best domestic airport. Again. A Port of Portland spokesman said the airport has taken the honor six consecutive times, running from 2013 to 2018.

“The credit for this accomplishment goes to our Portland International Airport team—the more than 10,000 who always deliver the best travel experience you’ll find anywhere,” Curtis Robinhold, Port of Portland executive director, said in a statement. “The caring spirit of our PDX team, served up with local restaurants and shops, gives PDX its much-loved heart and character, reflecting the very best our region offers.”

Check out the top 10 ranking below.

Seriously, just make PDX the best airport forever, and then the second best airport can enjoy some glory.

Those routes are neither daily nor year-round. They are very much geared towards the leisure traveler.

BTW their new head of route planning came from Alaska Airlines so I imagine he saw some low hanging fruit that he knew Alaska wasn't able to pick. I wouldn't be surprised if they add even more routes to Portland.

^^^ yeah, it’s too bad.

I used it last year to go to Mexico City, using it again in December to connect to Guatamela, and girlfriend is using it in a few weeks to go to Mexico City with family.

Sounds like it wasn’t getting the feed it needed to survive. Damn shame, as it was a really really great way to get to Central America.

(But, looks like DL is going daily on PDX-LHR next summer, so that’s a win on the international side. Volaris supposedly increasing GDL frequencies as well)

As the region's population grows, so does the need for expanded airport services. In December, United announced non-stop service from Redmond to Chicago will start in June, making East Coast destinations more accessible.

A $10 million expansion of the runway at Roberts Field, the regional airport owned by the City of Redmond, was completed Oct. 29. The project kicked off in February, making the runway 7,006 feet long and 100 feet wide.

portland can be a few cities, vancouver, east side, west side. then you have a downtown, big downtowns are rare in oregon. i lived there a long time and everyone knows that. central oregon has a few cities prinevill, redmond, bend. just like cities around eugene /salem, it just more spread out and theres no big buildings.

I've moved the misplaced post about the Redmond airport to the newly renamed Bend/Redmond/Central Oregon thread.

Let's keep this thread focused on PDX. Thanks!

I'm not sure if Portlanders feel the same, but I, for one, am thrilled that Nashville finally... finally... has Portland as a non-stop destination. I can't understand why it took so long!
