Renderings Revealed for 55 Hudson Yard

Quote:
A. Eugene Kohn and Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates worked as the design architect on 55 Hudson Yards. In a prepared statement, Mr. Kohn described the property as providing a “strong, elegant and extremely rational form within the Hudson Yards site. While its neighboring buildings are more sculptural, the building achieves its beauty through its unique gunmetal grey facade and proportions.”

I walked by the site a few days ago, and though they were just putting up another banner just for the hell of it.

Here's some footage of the groundbreaking from NY1...

It looks ok. Its not meant to be the "focal point" of the project so I'm indifferent.

View up the canyon...

I've been trying to figure out how they've going to hide that shaft that's there now, the answer would be somewhere on this side of the tower...

The way this tower will swallow the existing MTA structure is interesting...

Those pics got me thinking. What happens to the large boulders of schist and other rocks excavated during the foundation construction of any large building? Do they get sold to landscape companies in Jersey or Pennsylvania or something? If I had a nice SFH I'd be putting big chunks of schist all over the place and tell people it came from the basement of this tower or that tower. Seriously though does anyone know? Hopefully surely they just don't dump it in some landfill.

They are able to progress fast because this site has already been excavated.

Yeah, they are moving at a good pace. As I recall, some of the foundations have reportedly been built, at least according to when Extell had plans for a tower here.

A comparison of some of the photos above...
