It really was a great day. I was up about $30....not included money spent on drinks.

Edmonton horse racing contract awarded to gaming company
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...pany-1.3769645

Quote:
Alberta has chosen an international gaming company to own, build and operate a new horse racing facility in the Edmonton market area.

Century Casinos Europe GmbH is the successful candidate. Expressions of interest for the contract closed in May 2015.

The announcement was made Monday by a non-profit, private organization called Horse Racing Alberta (HRA), after months of speculation about the future of the sport in Edmonton and the province at large.

A news release didn't specify the exact location for the new racetrack or say when it would open.
I'm surprised, I thought Enoch Cree would be a no-brainer for this.

Century Casinos plans to build new horse-racing track south of Edmonton
http://globalnews.ca/news/2950086/ce...h-of-edmonton/

Quote:
Century Casinos has been chosen by Horse Racing Alberta to build, own and operate a new horse-racing track in the Edmonton area.

Century Casinos plans to build a new track and casino south of the city on Edmonton International Airport land, west of the RedTail Landing golf course.

“It’s basically going to be modelled after our Century Downs Racetrack and Casino in Calgary,” Paul Ryneveld with Century Casinos said, adding the Edmonton facility would be about 50 per cent larger than Calgary’s.

Ryneveld said the plan is to build a mile-long track with stabling for up to 800 horses. The facility will be two, possibly three, floors. Century Casinos hopes to break ground either later this year or early 2017, with plans to open in late 2018.

Didn't see that one coming. I thought for sure it would have been Enoch.

I wonder what kind of impact the noise from aircraft will have on peoples horse racing experience. And the horses!

Anyway...good news.

Personally I would have preferred the Enoch location. Casino, hotel, live venue, closer to the city. Plus not a fan of all the city-building at the airport.

LRT ought to be running right there with the next stop at the Terminals and another at the outlets and office retail complexes before looping back to Edmonton ... assuming we annex these lands.

It's a step closer than it was - and while I may not see it in my lifetime - we are seeing some developments that will add to the critical mass needed to make the route more viable. We now have the airport, outlet mall, the commercial, office and hotel developments planned but not all announced yet, and now a large entertainment venue with the track, casino and whispers of a hotel in site as well.

At the very least this builds the case to add a stop or 2 on any LRT or high speed rail at YEG into and out of Edmonton.

^ Also if Edmonton manages to land an international sporting event part of the package could be LRT to EIA

A bit of a stretch but possible

A location west of Red Tail Landing would put the facility fairly close to the runway (less than 500m?) but to the side of it and not directly under a flight path. Century Downs in Calgary located on the east side of Cross Iron Mills (and actually in Balzac I suppose) is directly under the flight path for 17L-35R at YYC but several km north of the airport. Still, the noise footprint would be pretty similar I would think and I have not heard of any issues.

Also Castrol Raceway would be directly to the west. Seems a very noisy place for horses.

Are you nuts? And run the piss out of it like they did with Indian Lakes - they couldn't manage a lemonade stand! The casino/hotel would be in the same dire position if it wasnt't there respective mgmt companies running them.

Are they planning on releasing any renderings of what they plan to build out there? Just curious.

They ran some renderings on the news last week. probably very preliminary.

I didn't like the pictures they showed last week on the news. No real Grandstand. Very boxy and that dam tan color!

Check out Calgary's track online. They said Edmonton's would be 50% bigger. Calgary's dosent look that great.
