'Children just didn’t come up during the public open houses, say planners. That’s not surprising. As anyone who has ever been to one can tell you, municipal open houses aren’t huge draws for busy, young families.'

Factually incorrect. Tis a shame the Journal didn't speak to DECL, the other park steering committee members or those more involved from the beginning.

Significant consultation and a community needs review was done. The green spaces/grass areas were meant for play, the fountain the same and the idea that you could add equipment or other items as needed to certain spaces. The site had finite amounts of things it could be used for and a balance was struck. Very similar parks WITHOUT play equipment were looked at in various cities and how kids and families used them.

McKay Ave at Dick Mather Park is looking at adding a playground.

Preparations are starting to be put forward for the official grand opening which will be in early Sept, but the park itself should be open for summer 2017.

Nice...great addition.

We need more green spaces downtown. And more trees and shrubs/flowers etc.

Soaring 15 feet above the new Alexander Decoteau Park, Canadian artist Pierre Poussin’s sculpture, Esprit, will celebrate Decoteau’s spirit and legacy.

Born in Saskatchewan in 1887, Alexander Decoteau served in the Edmonton Police Force from 1909-1916 as Canada’s first Indigenous police officer. He was also a celebrated long-distance runner, winning most major Western Canadian races while serving Edmonton. He competed at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics before enlisting in the Canadian Army in 1916. His achievements are enshrined in the Edmonton, Alberta, and Saskatchewan Sports Halls of Fame, the Police Museum and Archives, and at the annual Alex Decoteau Educational Run with Edmonton’s inner city schools.

Cool. I like it.It reminds me a little of Alex Calder's famous 'Flamingo' sculpture in Chicago, albeit a lot smaller.

Isn't there already a squiggly red lines arty thing planned down the street at the arena?

I understand art is subjective , but I'm way more of a fan of the art we've got recently that actually looks like some thought went into it instead of someone's mindless doodle while they were talking on the telephone or something...

Decoteau was an athlete. Looks to me like someone running through the ribbon at the finish line.

Bingo. Although looking the other way it appears to be about to embrace something or someone.

I try not to over-think art. Mostly, with public art especially, I look at the space around the art versus the piece itself.

In that vein, surrounded by brutalist mid-rise concrete on flat, flat, flat land - I like the colour, the relief and the whimsey.

Nice addition to an otherwise forgettable urban corner.

We should see things ramp up again soon with an anticipated June opening and official in Sept.

This is very much going to shift the livability of that area and our Downtown.

Looks good. Can someone post a picture of the render so we can compare the work in progress to the plan? Iirc, the doggie area is the NW corner that appears triangular?

Cold, thanks for posting. I see the write-up for the dog area says it is fenced in - yet open. I assume the fence is sufficiently high to prevent dogs from jumping over. Looking forward to seeing the park finished. Would you happen to know the status of the larger central park?

^6' for the dog park and garden.

The larger park is in property/land negotiation/acquisition and will be for another year or so mins.
