They were certainly pumping concrete yesterday afternoon by the looks of it and had what appeared to be some sort of apparatus bridging the deck perpendicularly to work whatever they were doing.

I paved on November 1st last year. It was glorious. Snowed that evening and everything shut down for the year.

Building new Walterdale Bridge like assembling puzzle made with 125-tonne pieces

ELISE STOLTE
More from Elise Stolte
Published on: January 5, 2017

Constructing the new Walterdale Bridge is like tuning a harp, or building a bicycle wheel. Sort of.

On this bridge — what the city calls its most complex infrastructure project to date — it’s easier to use analogies. The physics involved might make engineering students shudder.

Think of it: steel cables thicker than your fist stretched by several inches as crews poured the concrete deck. Steel arches bent into a target shape as the cables were tightened one by one, like tightening spokes to shape a bike wheel.

Korean steel fabricators — widely criticized for delivering a year behind schedule — didn’t just deliver 125-tonne puzzle pieces, they delivered 42 pieces deliberately misshapen so the forces within the bridge could form it into the right geometry.

One-on-one tour of the Walterdale bridge with Jim Montgomery, Lead Designer, Dialogue Designs and Ryan Teplitsky, Construction Project Manager, City of Edmonton to understand exactly what makes this bridge so complex to finally assemble.

“Every one of those pieces did fit; I was really surprised,” said Jim Montgomery, lead designer and engineer with the local firm Dialog, who gave Postmedia a year-end tour with city project manager Ryan Teplitsky.

The $155-million replacement to Edmonton’s century-old Walterdale Bridge is now on track to open two years late. But the arch is up, the deck is poured and crews will start assembling the graceful swoop of the east-side pedestrian path in February. When the weather warms up, they’ll finish the water-proof coating on top of the concrete and lay the protective asphalt driving layer. It should be completely finished by fall.

Despite the delays, it’s meant to be an iconic structure defining Edmonton’s river valley for the next 100 years.

maybe they're just trying to match the condition of the low level bridge spans and other existing bridges so there will be some consistency to our crossings. some cities use colour, some use lighting, we use rust...

Last section of the Pedway is being installed. That would be the last major component installation. So the cranes should be coming down next week. I also see they are starting to paint the lift points and connectors.

These are the ones we Inspected for hardness and toughness.

Some people on this forum said they would not be noticeable.

Oh they are. And not in a good way!
