Route chosen for train from Indio to Los Angeles

The long-awaited rail line that could connect the Coachella Valley to Los Angeles took another step forward on Thursday, when the Riverside County Transportation Commission selected a route to study even further.

That route would run from Los Angeles to Fullerton, swing north to Colton, and then continue southeast through the San Gorgonio Pass to Indio, according to the planning document the transportation commission approved on Thursday.

New Look at the LAX People Mover Set to Be Finished in 2023

The mega-overhaul of LAX's nightmare transportation situation, set to dramatically change the way we come and go from the airport, was outlined last year, with plans for a consolidated rental car center, a people mover train that would connect travelers with the rental car center as well as the Crenshaw Line light rail, and new pick-up and drop-off areas. The Landside Access Modernization Program has now started its environmental review process (due to be complete by late 2016) and the pricetag's gone up to $5 billion (from $4 billion last year), but the whole program is going strong in the direction of actually becoming a timely reality, perhaps even opening in time for a theoretical 2024 Olympics, according to a new release from Los Angeles World Airports, which operates LAX.

A presentation given today to the LAWA Board of Airport Commissioners today offered some updated renderings of the Automated People Mover, which will have six stations along its 2.25-mile route connecting it to light rail, the rental car center, and pick-up/drop-off areas. Construction is expected to start in 2017 and be finished in 2023; Mayor Eric Garcetti has "tasked" LAWA with delivering a completed LAMP "no later than 2023."

I wasn't sure where this should go honestly, so I hope it's ok if I post it here.

Congress Passes Omnibus Spending Bill – Includes Significant Rail Funding For Metro

“Metro thanks the U.S. Congress for providing over $250 million in federal transportation funds for Los Angeles County rail projects in their Omnibus spending bill for Fiscal Year 2016,” said Metro Chairman and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. “These federal funds will ensure that Metro can continue to successfully expand our rail network across Los Angeles County. I want to emphasize that I am deeply appreciative of the efforts of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who as a senior member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, worked diligently to ensure that these federal transportation funds flow directly into Los Angeles County. I am also thankful for the outstanding advocacy of Congresswoman Karen Bass in successfully securing these much needed federal transportation funds. Last but certainly not least, I am grateful to President Obama for indicating his support for this spending bill that will create more good paying construction jobs in Los Angeles

Closing 2.8-mile transit gap in Norwalk could smooth regional commute

The distance separating the Metrolink train station and the Metro Green Line stop in Norwalk is only 2.8 miles. Yet it has been one of the biggest gaps in the region's public transit system for more than 20 years.

Now, however, some local leaders think it's time to fill in the missing link. They want to resurrect a proposal from the early 1990s to extend the Green Line light rail tracks east to Metrolink's Norwalk-Santa Fe Springs station.

If the extension is built, transportation officials say, it would be a major step toward connecting the area's rail lines and would make it much easier for transit riders to reach destinations in Orange County, the Inland Empire and western Los Angeles County, including Los Angeles International Airport.

"This is a project Southern California needs," said Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson, board chairman of Metrolink, the passenger railroad that serves six counties in the region. "It's been a long time, but we are finally focused on getting this done and we have the right people talking about it."

During the last several months, renewed interest in the proposal has come from L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti; the city of Norwalk; the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, with 27 member cities; and the Southern California Assn. of Governments, a regional planning agency.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has selected Los Angeles-based builder AECOM to design and construct a nearly one-mile hyperloop test track in Hawthorne.

The high-speed transportation system proposed by Musk envisions a system of low-pressure tubes and air-cushioned pods capable of reaching up to 760 mph. The system, pitched as a replacement for high-speed rail, theoretically would allow riders to make a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco in less than an hour.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring on the test track, which will include a 6-foot-diameter steel tube and stretch nearly a mile adjacent to SpaceX’s Hawthorne headquarters. The track “will serve as a vacuum-sealed, high-speed proving ground for transport pod prototypes,” AECOM said.

Metro to unveil mass transit blueprint that includes tunnel through the Sepulveda Pass

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to propose a radical step: Pushing a tunnel through the mountains that could accommodate a toll road and a passenger rail line.

The tunnel is one of nearly a dozen major transit projects Metro says it could build if voters approve a $120-billion tax increase proposal expected to appear on the November ballot.

Other projects include rail lines through the San Fernando Valley and southeastern L.A. County, as well as faster bus service on a handful of major corridors, according to two officials briefed on the plan. They spoke to The Times on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
