Walked down to the bridge site at lunch, sadly the arches were not there yet.

Arches have finally arrived, there are some pieces on site and some pieces being taken off rail just south of MKT.

And yet they kept insisting that the bridge was going to open on time.
With this and the other recent delays, I think some heads are gonna roll in the transportation dept.

Unacceptable is exactly the word. Not much else to be said, incredibly frustrating to keep hearing this news.

At least we're not stuck without a bridge for that extra year.

The part that gets me is how or why the city kept saying the delay receiving the arches would not delay opening the bridge. Transparency, people.

I would guess it was legal positioning to be able to rely on the penalty clauses in the contract. They didn't want to indicate there was a delay until they had formal notice of delay from the contractor. My speculation.

perhaps but not sure why they just wouldn't have said nothing or that they are reviewing any potential impacts to schedule rather than putting a line in the sand by saying it remains on schedule. most of us hearing that were skeptical anyway...

And when they do finally get here and are lowered into place, will they bend?

I got on site at the Walterdale Bridge construction today and took these pictures of the massive arch pieces (the long delayed arch pieces). I can't wait to see them float across the river when they're putting everything together. Planning a picnic with my toddler at an opportune view point!

Like a massive meccano set?

These are each only slightly bent. Imagine what a massive span it's going to be.

I think on the sign by the river it says bridge 2015, project complete 2016. I could be mistaken.

Low river levels latest problem for much-delayed Walterdale Bridge project

Quote:
The delays on the Walterdale Bridge project and unusually low water levels on the river could mean sandbars might have to be dredged before massive steel arches can be floated on barges and installed. “We’re in the process of finalizing permits if there was some dredging required,” Allan Bartman, overall manager for the project, said on Monday. “Things certainly have been drier than normal.”

A lack of rain and a light snow pack mean water levels in the river are at their lowest July rates in 14 years. Water levels are usually higher earlier in the season when the float was supposed to happen, but delays in the arrival of the steel arches from South Korea mean the work is now unlikely to happen until the fall.

Contingency plans also allow for changing the shape of the barges to be used for the big float. Dredging would be used to take out a sandbar if water levels get that low.
