Yeah, it's very impressive what's going on at the site currently, and it's about to get a little more crowded...

NYC community board OKs ground zero mosque plans

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37343922/ns/business/

Quote:
NEW YORK - After hours of contentious public comment, a New York City community board voted late Tuesday to support a plan to build a mosque and cultural center near ground zero.

"It's a seed of peace," board member Rob Townley said. "We believe that this is a significant step in the Muslim community to counteract the hate and fanaticism in the minority of the community."

The vote was 29-to-1 in favor of the plan, with 10 abstentions. The move by the Manhattan Community Board 1, while not necessary for the building's owners to move forward with the project, is seen as key to obtaining residents' support.

Some board members wanted to postpone a vote until the next meeting to gather more information about the project and the organizations sponsoring it. But the motion failed.

The meeting was unruly, with project opponents jeering at speakers and yelling comments such as "You're building over a Christian cemetery!" while holding signs that read, "Show respect for 3000," referring to those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Many said they were not opposed to a mosque — just not one that's two blocks from ground zero.

The families of Sept. 11 victims "would be wounded by erecting a mega mosque so close to the place where their loved ones were massacred," said Viviana Hernandez, a chaplain. "Even though they may have altruistic reasons, the real terrorists will see it as a win on their side."

Conservative tea party activist Mark Williams has called the proposed center a monument to the terror attacks.

The organizations sponsoring the project said they are trying to establish a vibrant and inclusive-world class facility.

Plans for the Cordoba House include a performing arts center, swimming pool, culinary school, child care facilities and worship space.

It would provide 150 full-time jobs, 500 part-time jobs and an investment of more than $100 million in infrastructure in the city's financial district, according to Daisy Khan, spokeswoman for the Cordoba House.

Khan's husband, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, executive director of the Cordoba Initiative, one of the project's sponsors, said he understood the pain that people have about 9/11. But he said his community and congregation were among those that died in the attacks.

"We have condemned the terror of 9/11," he said. "We have worked to ensure that our mosques are not recruiting grounds for terrorists."

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said in a statement that by supporting the multi-faith community and cultural center, the board "sent a clear message that our city is one that promotes diversity and tolerance."

Stringer has been the target of disparaging remarks by Williams for supporting the plans and has defended his position and denounced offensive speech directed at him or at Muslims.

He said before the vote that he understood the sensitivities of the families of 9/11 victims.

"I don't think anybody wants to do anything to disrespect those families. They made the ultimate sacrifice," he said. "At the same time, we have to balance diversity and look for opportunities to bring different groups together."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said there were no security concerns about building a mosque in the area.

The American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative have said that they bought the building in 2009 and planned to break ground later this year. It could take up to three years to build the Cordoba House. A Friday prayer service has been held at the building since September 2009.

Besides the political and social opposition to the project, city officials say the plan also could be hindered by a decades-old proposal to give landmark status to a building that would be replaced by the mosque and center.

City officials say the current building, constructed between 1857 and 1858 in the Italian Renaissance palazzo style, is historically and architecturally significant.

Bruce Wallace, who lost a nephew on 9/11, said the center can change the misperceptions about Islam.

"The moderate Muslim voice has been squashed in America," he said. "Here is a chance to allow moderate Muslims to teach people that not all Muslims are terrorists."
Good for the city and people all around the world. This is a great gesture of unification and peace. Some of the rhetoric expressed at that meeting is quite disgusting, but issues like these are bound to create some flame wars.

I'm not sure that's WTC related at all, but it's been in the news because people have been making it. I've seen renderings of that proposal, it could have a thread of its own.

Meanwhile, I'm starting to think my guess was right about the beginnings of the visitors pavilion, possibly...

If you have 'em, post the renders and let's move my news post into a thread of its own, like you suggested.

Today is the eighth anniversary of the so-called. "Celebrations of May" associated with the termination of the "Clean Up Ground Zero." It consisted of Ground Zero were removed, and more debris that was September 11, 2001. The action lasted from mid-September 2001 to May 30, 2002, and while it exported more than 1,500.000 tons of rubble and steel, and 2,605 bodies in the bodies of five Poles.

The symbolic end of the campaign "Clean Up the Ground Zero" was called. "Funeral of the last element," which took place from 28 May to 30 May 2002.
It is now May 28 cut-off marks the eighth anniversary of the last element of which was a load-bearing column of the spinal CC1001BB3 South Tower. This column mounted on the foundation in April 1969 it was taken down after 33 years of performing his duties. It was removed during the evening ceremonies prepared, with respect for the dead and the same column, loaded onto a truck, falls in black cloth, covered with an American flag with a wreath located on it waiting for the deportation of Ground Zero.
In two days it will be May 30, eight years after the solemn repatriation of the last items from Ground Zero, which took place about 10:28 in the morning (NYC time), eight months and 19 days after the collapse of the North Tower. Transported under escort in silence through the closed streets of New York to JFK Airport hangar. For seven years absence from the Ground Zero 24 August 2009 she returned after restoration of Ground Zero.
Column CC1001BB3 carrier has become an important symbol for New Yorkers, which means the sacrifice and bravery, and suffering ... It is "The May celebrations" are considered to be completely "bury" the existence of the World Trade Center.

Y'all are going to run out of superlatives before the big stuff arrives.

A super column next to a Tower One jumbo.

Last time I saw a column this big there was a bridge sitting on it. But then again, that's what's going to be sitting on the supers.

I am a reserved and generally mild mannered person, my screen name was actually given to me by co-workers and Ironworkers under my authority.
But when I found out that some of the steel for the Transit Hub was being fabricated in Spain, and was LATE I lost my Zen !

My worst fears come to life !

Bad enough we're in a recession they have to shop out WTC steel fabrication to europe!

You have no idea how #%*^#)*&#)(&@$ upset I am over this, we have large, well established company's that can fab rings around any company in Spain and yet the company's here are going under and putting up there shops for auction. The equipment being bought by scrap dealers, cut up and shipped off to China to be made into the junk you buy at Walmart. WAKE UP! AMERICA IS GOING UNDER! But too slowly for most people to see.

This is a crime !

Where is that ask the PA link? I have some real questions for them !

Is the shop in Spain AISC Certified for bridge fabrication ?
Are the welders AWS Certified D 1.5 ?
Is the steel made by an AISC Certified mill ?
Where are the Mill reports?
Where are the non-disclosure agreements, signed by the shop owners?
Does the steel contract for the Hub comply with the "Buy American" Act ?

All these things are required in the specs for an American fabricator to meet.

(Google AISC)

PS: I am certified AWS D 1.1 and 1.5. I do know WTF I am talking about.

Welcome to AISC Certification

AISC Certification sets the quality standard for the steel industry and is the most recognized national quality Certification program for the structural steel industry. Companies that are AISC Certified have been through a rigorous initial evaluation, and are subject to annual reviews. Our independent auditing company, Quality Management Company, LLC, confirms that companies have the personnel, knowledge, organization, equipment, experience, capability, procedures, and commitment to produce the required quality of work for a given Certification category, whether they are a structural steel fabricator or erector.

STILL @$(&*@^$#(@&#^@(&#^@ UPSET! If they are late with the steel that is one failure of the AISC certification requirement, that they have the capacity to deliver the required steel in the time frame alloted. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is, I do not feel better after my rant !!!!!

PS: My rant is in no way directed at anyone in Spain, this failure is purely American!

There well be 4 of them supporting the #1 subway box and Greenwich St. The location of 2 of them can be seen on the earthcam, where the temporary steel supporting the box "bumps out".
