It's God's gift to NHL marketing departments. You can be 18-18-9 and sell yourself as a competitive .500 team!

I've got no problem with the shootout. No more playing for the tie like in the old days zzzzzzzzzz. It makes teams work for the bonus point. OTOH I detest the shootout for a medal round game in international hockey.

The loser point makes for more exciting races to the playoffs, if anything.

I'd prefer the model used by the IIHF
3 points for regulation win
2 points for OT/SO win
1 point for OT/SO loss

Missed the game Saturday but it sounded pretty good, and Elliott was fairly solid too, glad he's coming around finally.

Going with this point setup would destroy any parity but would make for some exciting hockey.

I finally mixed my love for the Oilers with my artistic acumen.

Pens win in OT vs the Caps... 8-7 is the final result. 9 goals were scored in the second period.

Parity artificially created by the NHL is just another means of getting more revenue out of its fanbases by making teams look more competitive than they actually are. The Islanders aren't 17-17-8; they're 17-25. Dallas isn't 18-19-8; they're 18-27. Tightening the standings and creating parity just makes teams look more appealing to fans who may or may not care all that much. Fans need to think that their team can win on any given night, otherwise they won't show up. It's unfortunate but that's franchise-run sports leagues in a nutshell.

Under the current point system and Points-per-Games Played metric, EVERY team in the Eastern Conference is .500 or better as of this morning. That is absurd.

If fact only 4 NHL teams are under .500 on the basis of Points-per-Games Played as of this morning.

Contrast this to the NBA where sub-.500 teams frequently qualify for the playoffs.

I like the concept of the 3 point system by giving different value for a regulation win, but I would still rather see the elimination of the loser point. I will never understand why this idea doesn't get more play:

2 points for regulation win
1 point for an OT win
0 points for not winning

Keep the shootout if you want, but if you don't win in regulation one point disappears. If you don't win you get nothing. That would light a fire under you. Even if you bring back ties the tie would be the same as losing so you would have to gun for the win in regulation, especially late in the season with playoff races on the line.

I didn't watch the game tonight as Grand Slam tennis has priority over regular season hockey but once again, didn't seem I missed much.

The whole defense seems to be a product of Andrei Markov. When is he coming back?
