Real Salt Lake advanced to its first MLS Cup final by beating the Chicago Fire 5-4 on penalty kicks after 120 scoreless minutes in the Eastern Conference final Saturday night.
Ned Grabavoy, a substitute in the final minute of overtime, scored the winning penalty kick in the seventh round as his shot went off the fingertips of Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando made three saves in the shootout after stopping six shots through overtime.
RSL, which joined the league in 2005, will meet Los Angeles in the MLS Cup final on Nov. 22 at Qwest Field in Seattle. The Galaxy reached the title game with a 2-0 overtime win against Houston on Friday.
The Fire have lost three consecutive conference finals, and this game was the first to reach penalties since D.C. defeated New England in 2004.
Salt Lake nearly scored in the final seconds of regulation but forward Robbie Findley's shot from the top of the box was cleared off the line by John Thorrington.
Fire forward Brian McBride saw his header hit the crossbar in the 27th minute, and midfielder Marco Pappa had a shot in the 67th minute saved by a diving Rimando.
This is the second time this season Chicago has lost on penalties. The Fire lost the SuperLiga final 2-1 via the tiebreaker to Tigres of Mexico on June 27

Are you for 'Real'? Seriously? I thought they were at the bottom of their division earlier on this season.

Awesome!! Let's see if they can pull out a few more stops and surprise the MLS community.

I am for "Real" They were 8th seed going into the playoffs. They took out the number one team Columbus Crew last weekend. Then tonight they won in Chicago beating the Fire 5-4 on penalty kicks after 120 scoreless minutes.

The biggest downside to soccer is that it is such a low scoring game. It tries your patience. If they could get rid of the offsides penalty, or maybe just move the offsides penalty to the final 1/4 or 1/3 of the field, then I think we would have much more exciting games. Either that or shorten the field.

and Spanish, which is where the soccer reference comes in, with teams such as Real Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Real Betis, Real Sociedad, etc, amongst others.

let's not forget that RSL wears VERY similar colors to the spanish national team.

since there is no spanish royalty in salt lake, nor is their team (as is madrid) more or less owned by the spanish government, the play on words is more poking fun at their ridiculous name.

When they chose the name Real Salt Lake they actually formed a partnership with the Spanish team with one of their goals being to develop youth soccer in the U.S., so in that regard there is nothing ridiculous about the name.

Actually I believe they selected the name some two years before the partnership was formed. The name was chosen in 2004 and the partnership was formed in 2006.

Real Salt Lake Returns Home.

Real Salt Lake: Who's laughing now?
Once the laughingstock of Major League Soccer, RSL heads to title game.

Barely three weeks ago, the idea sounded downright laughable. Two weeks ago, it remained all but impossible. Last week? Only then did it start to feel -- what's this? -- plausible.

Now, it's simply undeniable.

Once the bumbling laughingstock of Major League Soccer, Real Salt Lake is suddenly playing for the MLS Cup championship next weekend after a stunning playoff run that even the coaches and players surely couldn't have seen coming -- even though they insisted otherwise in a champagne-soaked locker room following their dramatic shootout victory over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Saturday night.

So SLC Projects... Look like you are a Big Soccer lurker/participant too, huh?

Anyway, this is great for the team and the community. RSL has had the potential to do this all season long, but they chose now to put it all together.

Go RSL!!!

No worries. I'm a helper.

it is too bad they weren't able to keep movsisyian(sp?) though I guess they've still got other options up top. They really took advantage of that idiot clavijo when they got beckerman. Lots of folks here are still bitter about that.
