Edmontonian here, please let us do a regional bid. We want some infrastructure upgrades too haha. Plus Edmonton-Calgary rail line, who doesn't want that?

Oh for the love of all things holy, don't resurrect that here.

Why? If it turns out the IOC isn't serious about hosting less corrupt and overblown ceremonies then like Nenshi said we'll walk away. If they are serious though this could fast track a lot of infrastructure spending from the Feds and the Province. In my mind we lose nothing by trying (ok 5 mil to study it, big deal!) and gain a ton if it works out.

No thanks to a regional bid , Calgary can host it alone ....

Banff, Canmore or Lake Louise will all have to be involved to some degree making the bid regional anyway.

It's also a big pass from me. But I've also recently read a book called 'Circus Maximus' which exposes how the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to hosting the Olympics/World Cup

I'm in for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed them back in '88 and I think we'd do a great job again. I doubt it will happen though - IOC is so corrupt and the demographics of the city have changed so much that I don't think there's enough appetite for hosting.

I guess we will see what Calgary's city counsel says ... I really don't think they had any kind of intention to include Edmonton .. the impression I get is Edmonton's mayor is trying to hitch onto the coattails of this bid after the fact ....

Calgary will have a new rink by then ... having the games spread out like that would lessen them IMO ... I hope Mayor Nenshi politely says thanks but no thanks to the Edmonton mayor ...

Calgary is already on the larger side of cities that have hosted the winter Olympics. Having a bid with Edmonton would just thin the sports out (there are really not that many in the winter version) and add massive overhead. It would be a nuisance for visitors, adding massive costs, time and logistics for them. Also, consider how ridiculously far it would be to get from Edmonton to one of the true world-class ski hills. Finally, Edmonton doesn't even have an international airport, and truckin' people back and forth from Leduc would be a nightmare. Building a multi-billion dollar high speed line just so that we could have a third-class Olympics spread over 500km is silly.

I am fully supportive of a Calgary bid. It makes sense to put forward the best bid possible and not have a socialist bid where we need to include all far-flung cities within our corner of the world. Edmonton has the fringe festival.

Rabbit hill is nice, but the bunny hill, easter bowl, and bunny hop runs will not make the cut. Sorry.

Are you saying this for reasons related to your own negative opinion of Edmonton, or for economic reasons (tourism revenue, branding, the spread of federal infrastructure funds, etc.)? You seem to be leaning towards the former.

Wouldn't a regional games cost even more?

I just don't see the Winter Games surviving under the current formula of host cities. No one wanted 2022. Can't expect the Chinese to bail out the IOC every time too.

It's possible that a regional structure would spread federal/provincial funding too thin to satisfy the IOC's demands.

I think the IOC should consider giving each location two games. This could be done in succession or on a rotating basis. Consider 2010 Vancouver, 2014 Sochi, 2018 Vancouver, 2022 Sochi, followed by another pair of cities taking over the next four games. This would give cities a chance to actually make a profit, and iron out issues from the previous games. It would also reduce the incredible waste involved when cities build venues which are then abandoned post-games.

Nothing like advocating for a regional Olympics that would require a $10B high-speed rail link by capping it with how that would be cheaper.

And I'm guessing this is your alma mater:
