Vendors have started bidding for a portion of the electrical work as of last week. This is definitely a good sign that things are going forward, but still puts the time table out a few months.

In an article a few days ago in the AAS, they mentioned that with all the construction going on at the same time, there is a shortage of construction workers which is causing construction delays. I've met sheet rockers and an electrician who work dt and they said when they finish one job, they move to the next. So its not like each new, or project under construction has it own full crew. They sometimes have to wait until manpower becomes available or work at a slower pace until then.

Tree removal

They brought a crane in and removed one of the trees from behind the former Gingerman. It's sitting sideways in the parking lot and its roots are in a giant pot. I'm glad they decided to relocate at least one of the trees. Perhaps this is a good sign that this project is starting soon.

Just so we have this quoted in this thread:

As for Hotel Zaza, at 401 Guadalupe St., a spokeswoman for the chain in Houston said there would be no comment on the status of that 160-room hotel until the end of February.

Well??? We're one week into March 2014! What's the status of this project, Hotel ZaZa?

KXAN did a well, duh story at 6:00PM about the downtown hotel crunch during big events like SXSW. They mentioned four hotels under construction: JW Marriott, Westin, Van Zandt and ZaZa. Has anyone been by the ZaZa site lately?

There was no mention of the Fairmont or any of the planned hotels.

Demolition and site prep should be underway for Hotel Indigo as well, has anybody trekked down Red River lately to notice if the ugly parking garage is gone?

Things will be great when you're downtown.

I've been watching the site from the 17th floor terrace at the 360 and I've seen no discernible changes to the site with the exception of it being used to house trailers for nearby events.

I can now answer my own question about the demolition of the parking garage for Hotel Indigo after trekking through the SXSW circus today. The parking garage is still standing and was packed with vehicles.

Any news? March ends tomorrow. I thought they were going to make an announcement prior to the end of March???

I'm worried about this project. As much as I have love "taller" towers, I'd love to see a Hotel ZaZa in downtown before a 33-story Aloft.

I worry (but, would not be shocked) that current and intermediate hotel financing is becoming clouded in Austin.

This is what the site looked like as of Friday. I too would like to see this one built most of all the current hotel proposals. It would add some nice density to that area.

Obviously I want the Fairmont built before this, but I'd much prefer Aloft over ZaZa.

Design-wise, at least, I'd rather see this than the Hotel Van Zandt, the Hotel Indigo and the Homewood Suites. Of course, this could still be built minus the hotel portion. It would just be shorter unless they decided to add more residential to it.

I really want Hotel ZaZa to start soon. I still have a lot of concern over the south wall on the Aloft.

I agree... I have yet to see any activity on the site though, and I don't think there's been any announcement yet even though we were promised one before the end of March.

This would be such great infill in the area and the delay/lack of news is concerning.

Regarding that south facing wall on the Aloft proposal, I don't think it is going to be very visible except up close. Take a trip north Congress (start around 3rd St) on Google Street View. There are tall buildings blocking all or most of the sight lines to the Aloft site all the along the way. The south facing wall will be set back from the street sufficiently to stay mostly out of view.
