Buffalo NY - South Buffalo

South Buffalo is the area of the City of Buffalo south of the Buffalo River, bounded to the west by Lake Erie, and to the south and east by the City Limits. This area was one of the last incorporated into the city limits, as it was formerly part of the Seneca Buffalo Creek settlement until the 1840s. Much of the area was once heavily industrial, including steel mills, refineries, foundries, and shipping docks on Lake Erie, but deindustrialization has resulted in the loss of most of the heavy industries in the 20th century. Many areas have been reclaimed and redeveloped in just the last few years, with parks and nature preserves replacing many of the sites. South Buffalo is also known for its large Irish-American presence.

Portions of the Outer Harbor area have recently been redeveloped as a state park, with extensive bike trails along with recreational boat harbors and small beaches. A multi-year master plan has identified future recreational, residential, and industrial development.

The Riverbend development along the Buffalo River, formerly containing a steel mill and petroleum refinery, has been redeveloped into a 21st century manufacturing facility.

South Park and Cazenovia Park, part of the city’s Olmsted Park, are joined by McKinley Parkway - similar to the Olmsted Parkway connection in other parts of the city. The Botanical Gardens, built in the late 19th century, is located at South PArk. Adjacent to South Park is the Our Lady of Victory Basilica, also known locally as “Father Baker’s” which included a large orphanage adjacent to the basilica.

As the area had been totally “built out” with residential and industry thru the 20th century, retail in the area has been almost exclusively small retailers, many of which declined as suburban developments have grown. Recently, South Buffalo, along with much of the city, has seen an increase in interest in redevelopment and the commercial districts have seen significant investment and restoration in just the last couple of years. Pride in the area’s Irish heritage have played a part in the areas increasing interest.
