If it weren't for that one red light, I probably wouldn't have noticed the Book Tower. I also love how the David Stott and Penobscot Building look in this picture. Very patriotic.

I love this pic! I also like a particular pic of Washington Blvd. that was posted not too long ago. Both show a row of continious classic highrises and skyscrapers. The only two American cities I know of that have this outside of Detroit, is NYC and Chicago. I just remembered, Midtown St. Louis does also.

Here's a couple I found on Flickr, scroll

Was only home for a little bit, so not enough for its own thread. This thread needed a bump anyway - sorry about some of the shot quality!

The shot with the fireworks is amazing. I love Detroit's skyline. It ranks alongside New York and Chicago in terms of historical high-rise buildings.

This is the first time I've looked at this thread and I saw some of the controversy from about a year ago. I'll throw in my two cents' worth as an outsider.

The pictures are all quite nice. Detroit has beautiful old (and some new) buildings, and a great skyline. However, as I looked at the pictures I thought about how different they are from really walking around on the ground. The first time I was in Detroit was probably about 5-6 years ago. It is without a doubt the most depressing place I have ever been. Coming from another Rust Belt city (Pittsburgh), that says a lot, I think. Then again, a Detroiter may say the same about Pittsburgh. Whole blocks of abandoned buildings--no matter how beautiful--do not make for a nice city when on the ground.

That being said, subsequent visits have shown me that there is progress. For a city with such a long history of decay, the amount of progress in a few years is probably remarkable. Slow progress is better than none. I don't pretend to know too much about Detroit, and I've only really been downtown and on the freeways. So, these are just observations from the outside, like I've said.

I do wish I could have seen the city around 1950--I'm sure it was a vibrant place.

BTW--Pittsburgh also has steaming manholes in the winter.

Thanks for the honest observation.

As someone who is imbedded in Detroit, I come from an entirely different perspective in that when I stand at the corner in downtown Detroit, I feel the complete opposite of depressed and overwhelming optimism. The changes are slow, but the city was once built right, and those ingredients are still here for the next stages to begin. Economies today (of the global kind) are defined by places and the concept of "place making". You cannot replicate downtown no matter how hard you try, and it is a living definition of sense of place and place making which will act in its favor as we move along to try and reinvent ourselves.

True, a lot of the city and surrounding areas of downtown aren't very pleasant to walk around in. You get a feeling of brokenness and gaps, and some of it seems at times, intentional...like developing something for the sake of developing it even if it is less than horrid.

In terms of mentioning Pittsburgh, I've only been there a few times, and compared to Detroit, I view it as having a much more enjoyable skyline display to look at than Detroit, and even though the street/ground presence is dense and could be way more funcionable than it is, it isn't. And though I'm willing to admit, Detroit's downtown streetscape is among the worst in America (but getting better), Pittsburgh didn't seem much ahead in that regard, especially considering the built-out space and density that Detroit doesn't have. Then again, I'm not a Pittsburgh freak like I am of Detroit.

--Oh ya, awesome pic, gs!

Wow! That is one of the best pans of the city I have ever seen. I only wish it would have stretched all the way to New Center. Great pics!
