Taiwan Tower Conceptual Design International Competition

The Invitation

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Taiwan, R.O.C. and celebrate the merger between Taichung County and Taichung City, the government of Taiwan, R.O.C. will erect “Taiwan Tower” as an important landmark in the new special municipality. Here, visitors will be treated to a panorama view of the park, the city and the natural surroundings. The new landmark will also help visitors and residents orient themselves as Taichung makes the leap to become a world-class metropolis.

Taiwan Tower is to be located at the southern tip of Central Park, which is part of the former Taichung (Shuinan) Airport site, Taichung city. It will become a vista at the southern end of a major boulevard. Measuring approximately one hectare, the site is situated across from the Economic and Trade Park to the north. The project will comprise of Taiwan Tower and the Museum of Taichung City Development.

Though not aiming to compete in height with other towers of the world, in principle the observatory of Taiwan Tower should provide visitors with a view of the Taiwan Strait. The height is planned to be at least 300 meters. In addition, the site context and local architectural character should be integrated with 21st-Century building technology to symbolize the new Taiwan spirit. Taiwan Tower should also answer its call for environment responsibility and adopt the use of alternative energy. In implementing the government’s policies in energy conservation and carbon reduction, Taiwan Tower will act as a model of green building for the 21st century.

Thus, an international competition will be held to seek a forward-looking and innovative design and enliven the project with a fresh look and multifunctional use. Outstanding design teams from home and abroad are cordially invited to contribute pioneering planning and design ideas. Spread your creative wings and let the dream of a new-age landmark for Taichung take off!

are they seriously going to build this metallic monstrosity?? i'm sorry, but this is a terrible design and would create such an incredible eyesore on taichung's skyline. dont you all agree??

and to compare this to the eiffel tower - which is so much more elegant - doesnt do this tower design any favors. taiwan's held many architectural competitions over the years where the winning design unfortunately never gets built. (national palace museum chiayi branch by antoine predock is one - his winning design was awesome!!) this is the one design i REALLY hope never gets built!!!

The tower is going to be higher and slimmer after detailed design. This information come from Taichung city vice mayor.

Taiwan Tower will help pay gov't debt with shopping, tourism: Hu

By Katherine Wei, The China Post
April 22, 2014, 2:53 am TWN

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Currently under construction, the Taiwan Tower may bring Taichung tens of billions of New Taiwan dollars after its completion, said Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) yesterday.

An estimated NT$6 billion is required to build this landmark of the Shuinan Economic and Trade Park; Hu had staunchly defended the construction project some three years ago when many voiced skepticism over the park's economic benefits.

Not only would the project boost Taichung's tourism, it would also make a chip in government debt, said Hu.

Taichung's Urban Development Bureau (UDB) Director Mu Gui-xing (沐桂新) delivered a report on the tower's construction progress yesterday, pointing out that the tower's retaining columns are expected to be finished by the end of 2014 while the construction of the main building is slated for January 2015. The 313.9-meter-high tower will include a museum, restaurants and a number of stores to attract visitors, said Mu.

The UDB has estimated that the tower will draw roughly 56.5 million visitors each year, a number that will in turn bring commercial opportunities of NT$10 billion for the surrounding businesses.

Three searchlights will be projected into the sky before the construction is finished and represent the hope that the tower will bring, said Mu.

According to Mu, the tower will be operated by an “Operation Transfer (OT)” model, meaning that the city may be receiving as much as NT$100 million in royalties and taxes. Also, the contractor company could earn back its investment on the project within eight years.

A Ministry of Finance report showed that the Taichung government had debts amounting to NT$49.8 billion by the end of last year.

The Shuinan Economic and Trade Park is an important indicator of Taichung's future and the returns from various related developments will be several times the investments, Hu had claimed previously when defending the project. The mayor also said the project is the city's most important in 400 years. The tower is being built in an environmental design inspired by the shape of the banyan tree and will be an “oasis” of the city.
