Thanks for the link! The panoramic images on the site are incredible. The views from the penthouse floors will be breathtaking... The lucky residents at those levels will have the entire floors to themselves, with 360 degree views.

That's a really nice website now. Showing the view from each floor is very cool.

Bad News...Yes? No? You be the judge...

According to The Austonian's press kit, their tower may only rise 680' (207.3m) into the air above Austin.

Hopefully, the PR people got it wrong and the building is closer to (or surpasses) 700' in height. There's just something about that 700' mark.

P.S.
It is my belief that the height of the tower was NOT decreased for any particular reason, but merely, a bit of research laziness on the part of the media. In all fairness, many articles did refer to the height being "roughly 700' tall.” And, until someone is able to confirm the “official” height of the structure from the final blueprints, I will hope for the best.

Yeah, I'm going to have to send them an email on Monday and find out what's up. Even if it is below 700 feet, 680 feet sounds like it was rounded up. And that's not good enough for me.

I think I may have found why there is a 20' difference...

Notice the "mechanical penthouse" in the crown of this May 2006 rendering:

Now compare it to these early 2007 renderings. It's missing...

There's your 20'; I think. If so, what was their thought process behind its removal? I'd still e-mail them (Ziegler Cooper) and confirm...

Now that I think about it, didn't the original plan call for a 48-story, 700' building? If so, I would assume that since they added 7 stories to the tower, that it’s height should have increased to somewhere between 780’ (~14.17’/floor) and 802’ (~14.58’/floor)?!? This brings the 780’ back into question...

I would tend to agree with you there. Their renderings may suggest this as well, based on the scale of the Austonian relative to surrounding buildings. By no means is this scientific, but the tower appears more than twice the height of the neighoring 100 Congress office tower (320'....x2 = 640'). Just my observation... the developer may have 'guesstimated' (albeit slightly) the relative scale of the building in the rendering)

You can have Atlanta. It feels like Dallas with beautiful deciduous vegetation and some hills. The way downtown Atlanta goes up to Midtown and then Buckhead then finally Sandy Springs blah blah blah reminds me of the same northward stretch of downtown/knox-henderson area/lovers lane/plano.

This building will be in the neighborhood of 780 feet. It was origionally planned at 48 stories at 700 feet, so the addition of 7 more stories plus the updated crown will definatly bring it up higher than 700 feet.

Would love to see 780 but their official press release does say 700.

I have spent a lot of time in Atlanta - I think Dallas has a much tighter cluster of buildings than Atlanta. Atlanta is the definition of sprawl... certainly plenty of tall buildings... but stretched along 8 miles of the peach tree cooridoor... only about 2-3 blocks wide. It really makes for an un-walkable city scape... now if there were a tram like Las Vegas running up and down the cooridor that might work well. The current train is very limited.

Back to Big D... much larger, tighter cluster of office buildings that hotlanta... but the residential sprawl to the northwest is a bit like hotlanta but not nearly as spread out and long.

I just visited Atlanta on business (6 or so of us flew in from around the country, took MARTA up to a station in midtown) and they are obviously infilling along Peachtree (a few buildings under construction up where we were). But the rail stops are far enough apart that the attractiveness of the locations halfway in between is pretty lacking.

There is probably going to be some confusion in height its not the first time we have seen this problem with other buildings either proposed or currently under construction. City of Austin website lists it at 780' but as Goldenboot mentioned before its not exactly reliable, but then again neither are the official press releases Ive seen mistakes on them as well.

Whew, this was a tough one to model. Basically had to start over again when I started adding the textures. While I learned a lot about SketchUp in the process, I don't think I want to do another building this detailed. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

I've uploaded this model to Google's 3D Warehouse, but the Mac version of SketchUp still has a bug where it loses the textures, so if you grab it it will be naked.

Oh, and btw, while I tried to size everything as accurately as I could, using floorplans and such, I had to make lots of guesses where I didn't have info. But, interestingly, after I finished, the building turned out to be almost exactly 680 ft tall.

This view is similar to one of their promo renderings:

From South Congress:

From Riverside (that's the Spring way off to the left):

From across Town Lake:

Wow Priller, Impressive all the way around. Fantastic work there. The above 2 you did; from South Congress and from across Town Lake, really stood out in my mind. Very striking.

Just driving over Mopac at Town Lake, the downtown view there is really amazing these days and will become more exciting in the coming months and years.
