Hawaii needs us and our money!!! I was planning a trip to Maui but started to read reports out of China and held off all travel including another trip to NYC. Last flight to Hawaii was United via IAH. Did fly Hawaiian between islands in first class which was the best of any airline I used.

In May 2012, Hawaiian took delivery of an A330 here in Austin. Have some photos of it sitting on the pre expansion Gate 2, which was the only wide body gate at the time. Some of us speculated at the time that accepting the airplane at AUS was an excuse to complete a proving flight to HNL. Could not come up with any other explanation for the delivery occurring here. Didn't think it would take this long, though.

It's good to see a new flight coming to ABIA, I remember when this would be almost a twice a month occurrence. COVID needs to F off already so our internationals can come back. I hope you all have been doing well!

39 Years of Austin Passenger Totals 1981 - 2019

Someone on another forum posted this link to Austin's yearly passenger totals beginning in 1981 through 2017 and I got 2018 & 2019 from Bergstrom's website.

Robert Mueller Municipal Airport - 1981 through 1998

1981 - 1,965,186
1982 - 2,217,568
1983 - 2,510,540
1984 - 3,310,668
1985 - 3,704,320
1986 - 3,639,910
1987 - 3,831,540
1988 - 3,880,450
1989 - 4,200,390
1990 - 4,281,720
1991 - 4,108,620
1992 - 4,270,136
1993 - 4,525,940
1994 - 5,100,022
1995 - 5,336,894
1996 - 5,706,450
1997 - 5,915,106
1998 - 6,075, 132

Austin Bergstrom Int'l Airport (opened May 23, 1999)

1999 - 6,670,851
2000 - 7,658,671
2001 - 7,199,322
2002 - 6,720,668
2003 - 6,707,081
2004 - 7,238,645
2005 - 7,683,545
2006 - 8,261,310
2007 - 8,885,391
2008 - 9,043,975
2009 - 8,220,898
2010 - 8,693,708
2011 - 9,080,875
2012 - 9,430,314
2013 - 10,017,958
2014 - 10,718,854
2015 - 11,897,959
2016 - 12,436,849
2017 - 13,889.305
2018 - 15,819,912
2019 - 17,343,729

It's amazing to see how AUS has grown, but also a little depressing to think 2020's passenger totals will probably be somewhere between 1998's totals and 1999's totals.

It will come roaring back once we get by covid. With all the corporate relocations here our service will increase dramatically. And we will see direct Asia. Austin needs to get a jump on expansion. When the full economy is back it will be loco.

Agreed. Future looks bright for ABIA. When you land a whale like Oracle any routes, both domestic and international, are possible. I predict all the international routes will resume service and well gain more. When Tesla relocates here it will be game over. I would assume UA has Oracle's corporate account but I don't know. One thing's for sure one of the big 3 will up their game in Austin for sure.

Agreed, the addition of Hawaiian is good news for times to come. I personally can't wait to see the blue KLM livery finally make its appearance!

DL RDU-AUS looks to be cut permanently. That’s too bad, hoped the route would stay. https://crankyflier.com/2020/12/14/a...tion-and-more/

In re: the return of business travel, CBRE just dropped their revised 2021 hotel forecast, and noted that Q3 and Q4 of next year will -- with an effective vaccine deployed -- show a "significant" return.

“The confidence provided by an effective vaccine will serve to sustain the relatively strong leisure travel patterns observed during the summer of 2020, plus initiate a significant return of corporate travelers during the second half of 2021. Group demand, on the other hand, will lag in recovery because of the advance-booking nature of this segment,” Gallagher said.[/QUOTE]

https://www.traveldailynews.com/post...on-of-vaccines

Here's a completely personal, weird datapoint: ALL the job ads I've been responding to (for mid to senior level sales roles) note prominently that travel and tradeshow attendance will be required as soon as safety allows. This is regardless of industry.

A TON of business travel is just waiting in the wings, IMO. So many healthy, cooped up, well-off folks are sitting at home, just quivering with travel lust. Whenever we reach a point of safety (which is hard to predict, but getting closer every day) it's going to kind of explode out of the gate. It'll be interesting to see if airlines/hotels/restaurants can ramp up capacity quickly enough.

I know. I'm kind of an optimist.

^^^ At this point, it's beyond optimism....it WILL happen. I truly think this decade will bring many great things after the storm passes in the coming months.

I just want a AUS-MTY direct. It doesn't even have to be daily.

That graph is crazy to see. The gap between January and February this year was greater than any of the gaps in the previous years, then like a remote controlled plane, went crashing down. The visual is just striking. Had the pandemic never occurred, July would have been well over the 1.7 mark.

Rumors are JetBlue is set to announce nonstop flights from Austin to Raleigh, San Francisco, and Cancun beginning sometime in February or March.

They need to greenlight the labor and funds on this now. This isn't CRE, travel will come booming back, no guesswork here.
