Photo Contest #46 - Panoramic

Great job on a tricky subject last time everyone. Congratulations to WZ1 for winning the Urban Exploration contest. They have chosen Panoramic images for the next contest.

- send a PM with the link to your entry to HomeInMyShoes
- one photo only
- no taller than 600pixels, I'll be lenient though because of the subject matter
- entries are due by January 16th, midnight

Sorry, the 16th is the deadline. I'm time challenged.

Not specified by WZ1, but probably 2:1 would be a bare minimum width:height ratio for this.

Five entries already. Keep them coming. Just to reiterate, January 16th is the deadline.

Does anyone have a good teaching website or advice on how to take a pano with a dslr? I would love to join the contest...I just have yet to learn how to take a pano with my camera. Thanks!

^It's pretty simple. There are just a few things to keep in mind.

1) Take all the pictures from the same spot. If you move the camera the assembled image won't make too much sense.
2) Make sure you have a good amount of overlap going from picture to picture, I usually have about 50% overlap from the last shot I took.
3) Put the camera in manual mode or the pictures will all have slight differences.

As far as assembling the pano goes, you can choose to do it by hand or use an automatic image stitcher. I use the program AutoStitch, because it works amazingly well and most importantly it's free.

You can download it here: http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

The program comes with a few sample images so you can get an idea of how much overlap you need for autostitch.

I'll have to try that program. I've never had any success with automatic panorama stitchers. All the pans I've made have been stitched manually in Photoshop.

Hmmm...good question. I usually think wide and not tall for panorama, but I can see that working too.

I'm not able to rehost pictures this time (size limit on my hosting account) so I'll be using the direct links this time.

if it was vertical i'd enter another pano, but i guess we'll just leave it horizontal this time.
