Anchorage at 100

Yup, this April marks the 100 year anniversary of Alaska's largest city. So in tribute, I put together this set that anti-climatically counts up to 89 pictures.

Anchorage Fun Facts
1. Anchorage was founded when President Woodrow Wilson declared the banks of Ship Creek to be the home base of the newly established Alaska Railroad which was tasked with building a rail line into the interior.

2. Over 40% of Alaska's population resides in the Anchorage metro (300k), making it second only to New York in terms of statewide population concentrated in one city.

3. Well, actually I don't really have a third fun fact

Nice! I'm curious about the air quality. Since there is so much concentrated in one area (port, busy airport, city) within such tall mountains, how much smog is there?

I once turned down a job offer as a civilian contractor at Elmendorf. I think about it every once in awhile, but I just don't know that I could live that far away from the rest of the world.

Love the night shots from up high.

Great pictures. It amazes me how the Americans can put a city anywhere. Yellowknife is Canada's best and, while very urban for its size, it's only a fraction of Anchorage.

Enjoyed this tour along Anchorage. Thanks for your pictures, mthq!

I´ve always felt attraction about Alaska and Anchorage. I´d love travelling to Alaska to enjoy the beautiful landscapes you´ve got there. It must be an unforgettable experience to reach Barrow or Prudhoe Bay to see the Artic Ocean.

I see Anchorage is an interesting city to visit.

I´ve liked the pictures of the cargo airlines widebodies too.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

It always amazes me that the US has an actual city in the north, while Canada only has a few very small towns. I realize the transportation and climate are more hospitable in Anchorage than in Yellowknife or Iqaluit. But still, Anchorage would be in the top 15 largest metros in Canada. And Yellowknife has like 18,000 souls.

im sure it helps that it is a port city. the western end of the canadian territories are sort of cut off by alaska.

if i remember correctly, i read that there was a time when british columbia was considering entering, being annexed, and of course there was that brush with being taken by the united states, and there probably would have not been vancouver as we know it.

Nice coverage! The city-to-state population concentration is even more intense in AK vs NYS because of how much larger it is.

Smog usually isn't a problem here. What does foul up the air however is sand that was left on the roads during the winter and by spring is being kicked up by cars. Every once in a long while we'll get a smog blanket from China, though very rarely. In some of the photos midway through the set, the view looks somewhat smoggy due to the remains of a sandstorm in Mongolia.

You should do it! There are tour services that drive people up to the Arctic Ocean from Fairbanks. If you're feeling brave, you can join the polar bear club and run into the sea (but get out quickly!)

Indeed that is Denali / Mt.McKinley. I'm not sure the exact distance, but It's certainly a little less than 200 miles from town. It can only be seen from Anchorage on clear
days.

Yea the cost of living is high. Every consumer item from cars to groceries comes through the port with ships sailing from Tacoma, Washington. Bush Alaska (rural Alaska) is most famous for its cost of living as a gallon of milk has been known to cost up to $7. It's something like $2.99 in Anchorage I think.

Interesting photos; I would never have realized it was that young though. It definitely shares a West Coast feel similar to that of BC and the rest of the Northwest.

Awesome set. I really like that first photo with the train and skyline.

I noticed there's a construction elevator on that building. Is it new, or are they renovating it?

Denali is about 130 miles from Anchorage.

Really interesting photos. I've been through the airport on the way to a job at Prudhoe Bay, but didn't really see the city except from the air.

The interior can actually get pretty hot (e.g., Fairbanks).

They renovated it. It was abandoned since the 1970s but is now restored to its former use an an apartment building (with its original colors from when it was built in the 50s). It's called McKinley Tower

^One of the only highrises in the city and it sat vacant for 40 years? That must have been annoying to look at.

Nice set.
