Same here. Per the Census Bureau's data, New Orleans would rank in the #12 spot on the list I posted earlier, right after Richmond. New Orleans' MSA population is estimated at 1,134,029. That's 13% off from its level at the 2000 census.

Urbanscraper, how are you arriving at those population totals? The data both KB0679 and I are referencing is the US Census Bureau's 2008 estimates.

Initially I wss confused by your inclusion of DC in his metro list, since it was omitted from the cities. I think I see your logic now, though I wouldn't consider a MSA whose core city wasn't in the Southeast. But that's subject to preference and interpretation, as I noted in the case of Louisville earlier.

But he DOES know that the Triangle is larger than the Triad. That's what I was referencing in particular.

According to the 2008 estimates straight from the Census Bureau, the Triad CSA is at 1,552,495 and the Triangle CSA is at 1,690,557. And if you're going to use the CSA stats for those two metros, they should have been used for all.
actually The Triad has 1.6 million

It was a bit disingenuous on your part to cite the higher figure for the Triad but not the Triangle (or the 2.2 million figure for Charlotte for that matter). Even then, the 2008 figure was more of an estimate/projection. The certified figure was from 2007 and was 1,578,881 for the Triad; for the Triangle, it was 1,891,217. No matter how you slice it, the Triangle has more people than the Triad.

At any rate, when you're comparing multiple metro areas across a region, you want to use the Census numbers to make sure you're doing an apples-to-apples comparison across jurisdictional boundaries.

Yeah man gotta say tweaking your list to put Greensboro/Winston-Salem on par with Charlotte is pretty fanboy. Being fanboy on these forums doesn't get you or your metro very far. This place is teeming with census geeks who know CSA numbers like Dustin Hoffman in Rainman.

I would place New Orleans ahead of Charlotte easy. Its downtown is much denser than our's and feels bigger.

Fair enough. I think I just get fixated on BofA...it's so pretty. You get points though for light rail.

You left out Murfreesboro, Tn with a population of 100,575. This is from the completed special census from last year.

I dont understand why this thread is relevant when it is clearly obvious that everyone is biased. There were cities left out of the "count" that's population were 50 to 100,000 larger than some cities at the bottom of the list. This thread is ridiculous. Just sayin.....

You've stated the obvious, and presented an idea that was made clear in post #2.

I am curious where you obtain your data for city populations. I recently consulted the US Census Bureau and they have the "official" estimates for all incorporated cities in the US. These numbers show--as your data show--that Charlotte has a larger population than Memphis. However, the population of the cities you listed are larger than the numbers given by the Census Burear, except for Raleigh, which is just over 392,000.

They seem to be customized populations. For example, the Greater Birmingham area isn't that large.

It's just a list, but, if he is going to include Birmingham Alabama area of over 1.5 million, he could include New Orleans Southeast Louisiana area metro area which would be over 2.6 million....over 3+ million live within 80 miles of Downtown New Orleans. Why do you think New Orleans has two professional sports teams and Birmingham has zero? It's because of population in the surrounding area.
