Lesser seen San Diego

Just a sampling of a few San Diego neighborhoods.

Neighborhoods featured are the East Village, North Park, South Park, Balboa Park, Embarcadero, Gaslamp Quarter, and Hillcrest.

Starting off in the East Village, this is where much of SD's residential infill development is taking place. This is also home to the Padres, Petco Park.

That's the Coronado Bridge off in the distance.

Lots of mid-rise infill going on:

Lawn seating at Petco is popular during Padres games.

The Blue Line will take you to San Ysidro, the international border crossing with Tijuana.

South Park: About a mile east of the city center and on the southeastern edge of Balboa Park, this neighborhood features craftsman architecture and popular restaurants among locals.

San Diego has an impressive craft beer industry, one of the largest in the US.

The skyline peaking out above Balboa Park:

North Park: Unofficially known as one of the best hipster neighborhoods anywhere, North Park is also home to many of San Diego's best restaurants and independent retailers. In recent years it is seeing a lot of infill and gentrification.

The Post Office was saved and integrated into the new condo development.

More infill -- the North Parker. Built by a San Diego-based architect / developer who has similar projects around town.

Balboa Park
From Wiki: "Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre (490 ha) urban cultural park in San Diego, California.[3] In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation zones, green belts, gardens and walking paths, it contains museums, several theaters, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. There are also many recreational facilities and several gift shops and restaurants within the boundaries of the park. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park's site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. Today, Balboa Park is managed and maintained by the stewardship of the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Diego."

The Olde Globe hosts a popular summer Shakespeare series in the outdoor amphitheater.

Hillcrest: SD's "It" neighborhood.

And then coming back downtown, the Waterfront / Embarcadero area is undergoing a major reconstruction that will make the waterfront promenade more pedestrian friendly and inviting.

And finally, the Gaslamp:

Thanks for viewing!

Such lovely photos... You got around a lot!

South Park is one of my favorite neighborhoods, but you'd be surprised how few San Diegans actually know about it (those who don't live in the inner part of the metro). It's craftsman-home aficionado's wet dream.
