Some dude and 50 West. How dare he stare at the floor with that view. He should be looking out the window!

Darn right! He should also have his bed propped up on one end so the view is he last thing he sees before his eyes close, and the first thing he sees when his eyes open!

Its amazing how a 778 foot tower looks tiny in that skyline. Here in Pittsburgh, that would be the second tallest tower.

Just another brick in the wall. Its a good thing but at the same time, I think, a bad thing because it really sets the standard high. In other words, we can't get too excited over a 600 or 700 footer because its just average. In any case, below average with everything that's rising in this boom cycle. 900 feet is the new standard. At a minimum, and it needs to have a good design to stand amongst its competition. It's the hard knock life for a NYC tower these days.

New Public Plaza will Encircle Helmut Jahn’s West Street Tower

Quote:
Helmut Jahn’s new 782-foot-tall condo tower, 50 West Street, will soon be complemented by its very own pedestrian plaza. The Wall Street Journal reports that this fall will mark the reveal of the new privately-owned public space that will function not only as an urban oasis but also as a deterrent to the sidewalk traffic that would’ve increased as a result of the glassy pedestrian bridge pending construction above West Street.

Instead of feeding into the sidewalks, pedestrian traffic from the overhead bridge will empty into the plazas, inviting people to stick around and enjoy the new space. The plaza, which will be open 24 hours a day, will wrap around 50 West Street’s base with a cafe, art gallery, seating space, evergeeen trees, and plants in its lineup.

I know I'm stating the obvious, but the slope of the roof directs your attention to One WTC.
Now I know that the slanted roof concept was made popular by the diamond topped 2 WTC before it's design was scrapped completely.

Just glad to see this concept unofficially complete the original WTC master plan.

Thoughts?

It's a bit weird that they went with an even more transparent glass at the mechanical level. Jahn likes showing off mechanical/structural so maybe that's why.

It fits beautifully in that last photo. ^

I think they'll light the mechanical section up at night from the inside. That would probably explain the more transparent glass

What are they doing with the wretched building that abuts 50 West? It appears that there is some kind of facade work going on, but I cannot make out what exactly it may or may not be.
