The Distrikt is closing

Posted on Facebook yesterday. After +/-30 years...Regina's long enduring live music venue is closing. As discussed earlier in this thread it was known at various times as the Schnitzel Haus, The Venue, Channel One, The State, The Distrikt....and apparently at some point Antilles.
Anyone know when the Antilles name was in use?

Here's one for you guys!!! The Avord Tower was the tallest as well!

I'll bet that this version is from about 1970. (The original black 'n white version was from 1964.)

It was sung by the O.C. Guys and Gals.

Enjoy!

Most likely American jingle singers. "OC Guys and Gals" refers to the Hamilton version, which was done for CKCK's sister station CKOC radio.

Ya, I looked into that as best I could here. The O.C. Guys and Gals did only Hamilton's CKOC's radio station alright. I thought that they were contracted to sing 'Wonderful Town' for many cities [with taylored lyrics] around North America.

None-the-less, it's a good piece of nostalgia!

"O.C." undoubtedly refers to the CKOC call letters. It looks like it was actually done by Richard Ullman and Associates, per this site.

I do know the lyrics were customized for Regina by Carol Gay Bell.

Also check out "Happiness Is". I especially like the economic report at the end. Housing starts up 300%! Makes this year's 100% increase look pretty weak.

Yes, I was tryng to find a Carol/Carole 'something' on Google yesterday. Thanks! We've all heard other versions of this song; . . . . and you know what? Regina's has the best linguistic flow and harmony. (Of the versions I've heard anyway.) It's almost as if it were meant only for Regina/CKCK.

I reckon that this version of this interlude was produced in about 1970 [In colour] to replace 1964's black & white version.

"Happiness is" . . . is another good one!

Guys: Are they actually drinking beer in this one. There is a glass that's shown 3 times here. It sure looks to me that one guy is actually drinking beer!

Other things: The cameraman with the Budweiser shirt; an Air Canada DC-9 with the old livery; and the dude at the beginning [walking left-to-right past the camera wearing a dark hat/glasses] looks pissed-off!!!

Here's yet another interlude of that time. This one is by Jim Roberts. (He and my dad used to socialize together.) Jim Roberts was definitely the "Regina Chapter of Robert Wagner."

Anyhow, back then, he sang commercials 'n such on CKCK. Regrettably, we don't really see this sort of stuff anymore. (Probably 'cause this is non-revenue-type airplay.)

The U of S has launched a history website for Saskatchewan. Big searchable archive of photos, most of which appear to be postcards.

Here's one that caught my fancy -- Northgate Mall, from the 1960s

What is interesting about this 18 Block Scarth shot from c.1915 is that the east side has not changed at all in nearly 100 years. Those two beautiful cornices atop the Willoughby and Duncan Building are unfortunately gone.

Also interest rates are wayyy lower on savings now.

Distrikt closing

As most of you know, local live music venue The Distrikt closed a couple of months ago. Earlier in this thread, we were trying to recall all of the names it functioned under...and I think almost all of them were mentioned at some point...
However I just stumbled on an article from the Leader Post that I missed when first printed...apparently the list starts with The Schnitzel Haus and then proceeds through...Club Soda, The Venue, Antilles, Channel One, The Underground and The State...before ending its run as the Distrikt.
Very interesting article.

There is one club before all the others (after the Schnitzel Haus closed) and it was a gay dance bar/club called Merts. I don't remember how long it was in existence before it closed.

You're right. Mertz was short-lived but I remember it because my then-boyfriend and I used to dance there. It existed from 1994-1995.

What happened to those cornices? It's a subtle change, but a sad change!

This has been like one of those games where you have to figure out what is different between two pictures - I went walking down scarth this morning staring up at the cornices and they seem to be unchanged. Did you mean the two "parapets" that are missing? Shame because they look spectacular in the old photograph.
