eBay

It's obviously some kind of transmitter, right?

Do you think that old pedestal is a hold over from WWII

Free night out at the Cocoanut Grove for any noirisher who can find a second photo with this mystery thing. (I tried) I FAILED
I haven't found any more pictures of the antennae from the original photo, but these two have the same platform on a column, only with some sort of dish on it. I've included insets of the platform. The original images (links below) are much larger.

I still have no idea why it was there!

Does anyone remember where, in Long beach, the Brainard Apts. was / is located?
According to the 1937 Long Beach CD, the Brainard Apts were at 525 W Seaside Boulevard (manager, Genevieve Taylor). The Hotel Compton was at 541 W Seaside Boulevard (manager, Oliver C Sodergren). In the foregound, Seaview Court was at 521 W Seaside Boulevard (manager, Carl Newsom), and J E Gaster's grocers was at 501 W Seaside Boulevard.

I'm still looking for other pictures.

Have we seen this rather unusual church?

Sierra Madre Church....11 - 29 - 24.......................................

I wonder if all the stones were collected in the surrounding area. That would be awesome.

.
The Bethany Church is still on the corner of W. Montecito and Baldwin, but the original building is no longer present. They have a scan of a contemporary book about the building of the original Bethany Temple. Interesting writing style.

https://www.bethanychurchsm.org/wp-c...Scan-book-.pdf

Also found a scan of a vintage colored postcard of the temple.

It was reported as to be razed on Christmas, 1955; it must have gone down in 1956 . . .

And here is the replacement church:

gsv

It appears that they might have re-used some of the stones from the original church in the base of the sign, and in the low wall farther back.

Otis, you piqued my curiousity so I googled Keuffel & Esser items.

This cast iron pencil sharpener isn't the most impressive Keuffel & Esser item but it certainly brought back memories of drafting class.

..........If I remember correctly, you stuck your pencil in the hole and moved the top part in circles. (I believe there was sandpaper inside

etsy

It was made of cast iron so it wouldn't fly off the table.

Does anyone else remember using one of these things to sharpen a pencil?

.
I've never used one of these, but I sure want one!

I have this one that belonged to my Dad. He was a draftsman at Hughes Aircraft before he was an engineer there. I have some of his drafting pencils, blotting powder, and his slide rules.

They are available on eBay all the time. Frequently in mint or near-mint condition with box. $10.00-65.00. Good luck.

That link is really interesting, Lojack...it has all sorts of detailed information. (I have to admit, I found the "interesting writing style" somewhat confusing.
..(I skipped over the religious parts)

A mystery building.

The PDF begins with a story about a "partially blind frenchman" (Louis D. Cornuelle) building a basement beneath an already-built three story wall in downtown Los Angeles.
at the corner of Los Angeles St. and Winston.

I'm hoping one of you fine sleuths can figure out what building (at Los Angeles St. & Winston) this story is about.

Here's the story.

Actually, there are two buildings in the story. The corner building and the adjacent 'three story wall' building.

.

I'm pretty sure this snapshot is from the same album that had the 'Sierra Madre Church' (Bethany Temple) photo in it.

Vermont Ave. ...1 - 11 - 25............

eBay

Does anyone recognize this spot?
.

And......

...................................................................................Is that writing up there in the darkened area?

Here is a closer look at the buildings on the left.

Not much to see. ....There might be a billboard in the mix.

Vermont and Hillhurst on the way to the Greek. The trees along the side are the North Vermont Ave. Morton Bay Figs.

ETA: The mountain behind the palm tree at the right is Glendale Peak.

That, by itself, wasn't what wiped out the Lugo House, which was about two doors south of where Los Angeles Street turns to the right.

Where Los Angeles Street turns right it leads straight into the front parking lot of Union Station. This was once the old alignment of Sunset when it skirted the north side of the Plaza.* During that time this section of road was variously signed as East Sunset or Marchessault, and listed either way in city directories. So the Lugo House along with its neighbors might have been saved, but that small triangular area between Alameda and L.A. Street was razed for a small park, and a parking lot. Hail progress!

*Sometime during the 1960s Sunset Boulevard was realigned one block north, to the northern end of Olvera Street, and Marchessault was closed to vehicular traffic. Although the El Pueblo management does their best to convince us that Marchessault/Sunset was never more than a quaint small town horse and buggy street, before the realignment it was a multi-lane boulevard--essentially the continuation of Sunset east of Main Street. Past the Plaza to the east, East Sunset/Marchessault led straight into the Union Station parking lot.

There is a Market Court in the Produce Market and was a Gas-O-Meter at 7th and Alameda.

It's at 7th and Market Court and the photo is flipped horizontally. The buildings on the left of the photo(should be right) are the produce market buildings. 7th makes a turn at Alameda and so the view would be looking straight at the Gas-O-Meter.

re: Bethany Temple, Sierra Madre CA.......(...for those of you who didn't good through the PDF of the booklet) ... Thanks again, Lojack.

This rotunda was completed first.

PDF

A sideview showing the original rotunda situated behind the the larger rotunda of the Bethany Temple, Sierra Madre.

PDF

Lastly, the final congregation outside the old Bethany Church, 1956.

Joe Hinojos, sierramadrenews

If the church was structurally sound..pox on them.

I just noticed the little flag pole with the plaque. It seems awfully short.

(oh wait...maybe it continues upward)..or is that a tree?

That's a dipole loop antenna. They're widely used in radio and telecommunication. We can see the loop near the base.

I thought it looked familiar, but I'd forgotten that I'd commented on it five years ago!

The original posts are well worth revisiting, especially Lorendoc's here. My follow-up is here. It appears to be a UCLA image which is clearer in Lorendoc's post.

E.R. - I believe the old produce market you were thinking about was this
one on Central near E. Third St. in Little Tokyo.

LA1111cityproducemarket

We discussed this years ago here, and I think you may have originally posted this image? Not sure.

This is me trying to remember stuff from years ago...
I only remember this photo because it was right down the street from where I worked.
