The Bowie looks like it's going to eat The Monarch.

Lol I see what your saying.

I still think the lighting is just weird with that blank spot, they really should consider doing something about that.

Bowie Pac Man yeah, its going to look incomplete or like a perpetual issue with the lighting if left the way it is.

That is just weird. It needs to be continuous and needs additional lighting besides just up. It's a good start, but that is about it.

Expanding the convention center may allow for an opportunity to build an arena with the help of UT?

You mean making an arena part of the convention center? Interesting.

The Bowie lighting

If I were designing the lighting on it I would have left off the lower section and not lit that part. I only would have lit that upper portion and have it extend over the sloped section of roof.

Otherwise, I would have only outlined the notch with the lights plus the sloped roof.

And I would have softened it some. Those lights are so striking and bright. Maybe a bit dimmer and a different color.

Fort Worth has an arena attached to its convention center dating back to 1968. They're actually planning to demolish it for further expansion of the convention center.

Here's a Google Earth flyover that shows it with their "new" (about 5 years old) convention center hotel. The upper floors of the hotel are condos.

That looks good. Green is actually what I was thinking of for it.

oh man, if only that were the actual color. I like the white light, but the green would really make it pop.

You can see on the Central Library picture page that they are laying the tub girders for the second street bridge now.

That's EXACTLY what I would like to see. Excellent job lzppjb!

They can easily line each of the balconies. I've said this before. To limit the glow of the lighting to the balconies they simply just need to add some solid strips to block the light from above and below.

Now send that picture over to the company that owns the building.... lol

There is not enough room/land around the convention center for a major expansion of its exhibit, meeting and ballroom space plus a sports arena.

From a basketball fan point of view, a packed Gregory gym trumps a half-filled sports arena twice the size.

I really wonder what will eventually have to be done about that. Will we eventually end up with a second one somewhere? It's good we're getting the big convention hotels with their own space to substitute the space the convention center can't expand to. I really wish they had thought ahead and built the convention center within the view corridors of the Capitol where it doesn't matter to have a sprawling short building. I guess it could still be done in the Capitol Complex, but then the city would have to negotiate with the state, and I don't see that being very successful.

But a city the size of Austin with no major arena is not a good thing. It's not just Basketball, it's concerts and other major events that need a large indoor arena. It would be foolish to dismiss that and UT knows that as much as the city of Austin. Remember UT makes money when non university events are held at the Erwin Center.

There will be one... and UT will make plenty of $$. I'll bet cha a cocktail that there is something in the works already. UT is playing this to their favor.
Bet cha!
