They have not been through plan review yet. They had to wait for the zoning height change went through before they could do that. Hopefully they will be submitting something soon.

Empire has a new website and has posted a couple of sneak peaks of Astra on their new website! Both towers appear to have gone through a few tweaks...more glass on the tallest and less of a jinga looking façade on the shorter tower.

Here's a couple screen grabs I managed to get. Not sure on this, but it appears that the glass kind of morphs from flat at the bottom to angled panels towards the top. The main tower also now goes nearly to the ground level giving it a taller look. Looking pretty good!

Nice! I like how big the tall tower is, it will look massive compared to Chase.

This puts a big smile on my face! I was not a fan of the first rendering but let it slide because it was an opportunity for a 500' foot plus tower but this is night and day for me. I love the glass!

Scottsdale developer buys site to build Arizona's tallest tower

By Corina Vanek – Reporter, Phoenix Business Journal
Dec 23, 2020, 6:00am MST

Basic points:

Quote:
Scottsdale’s Aspirant Development purchased a nearly 2-acre site near Second Avenue and Van Buren Street in downtown Phoenix where it plans to build the tallest tower in Arizona.

The deal has taken years to come together, Mike Sutton, principal at Lee & Associates in Phoenix, who along with Brent Moser, represented the seller, Desert Troon, in the $9.2 million transaction that closed Dec. 15. The property was in escrow for nearly two years, beginning in February 2019, as the project, called Astra Phoenix, went through the planning and zoning process. The Phoenix City Council gave the project final approvals in early November.

The $420 million project will total 1.8 million square feet in two towers, and will include over 390 units of luxury apartments, a 254-key, four-star luxury hotel, 190,000 square feet of Class A office space, 290 co-living units and 15,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

The firm is aiming to break ground on Astra in late summer or early fall of 2021.

I know we all wish this would start sooner but at least 3Q is better than 2022

I thought they were doing away with the office space, but I guess part of it remains? I could never figure out in which building it'd be located but a) I don't know the first thing about engineering, city permits, planning etc and b) I'm probably just not looking hard enough.

I'm glad we are getting some confirmation when they are breaking ground. I think they break ground in the fall because Central Station is starting their project early 2021. Those are two pretty big ground breaking for 2021. I can't wait to see this 2023!

I don't think doing away with the office was ever discussed. They'd have to amend their plans which for a project of this size would be a giant pain in the butt.

The amount of development and density within a few blocks of this area will be pretty impressive. I think it will be interesting to see how the next developments looks after these few projects get done.

Hopefully by 2023 or 2024 Ragastar will jump on board and build their tower too but I am not high on them at the moment but we will see.

I remember that's the one proposed for right across the street from Station 1, but was there ever a rendering?

Rastegar bought the parcels addressed as 326, 334 & 338 N 4th Ave on July of 2019 with ideations of a new tallest with vague details.

There haven't been any renderings or permits issued on the site, much less rezonings.

I would count this project out. If they were serious about developing we'd at least see a pre-application conference permit (PAPP) by now.

I agree, I don't think anything will happen in that lot anytime soon which is a shame because I was hoping they would at least show something by now.

SLC decided to slap Phoenix in the face and call it's new tallest tower breaking ground this summer to Astra Tower.

I suspect Phoenix's Astra will probably have a name change when built.
