Maybe the most exciting potential development outside of the arena in the history of the downtown. This would be incredibly transformative.

Hmm I've always viewed those lots as perfect spot for cluster of residential towers. Seeing as no developer is buying in (other than super delayed Lamb) this will do great.

Hopefully it spurs some development around it.

Still many empty sites for added towers/density and many other underdeveloped sites to redevelop. But yes, towers around the park to the east, north and west.

I read somewhere that this will cost $28M to expropriate this land. So how much would it cost to buy Frank Oliver Park in front of the Hotel Mac?

This would be great. Urban parks really enhance the fabric of a city's core, and I would much rather have a huge park than condo's. There's plenty of room in downtown Edmonton for condo's.

This looks great! It will get rid of those eyesore parking lots and pull the surrounding areas together.

I presume that at some future date, say in 30-40 years if everything else is built out the city could sell portions of the park for more development (but hopefully not the whole thing!)?

Also, is there any reason why the city can't build a 5-6 story parkade on one of the lots and get revenue that way/replace the parking that the park will take up?

Any idea about the timeline for any of this actually happening?

It needs to have closed hours clearly stated and visible and ini needs to be fenced with locking gates - iron railing style as in Europe. Nothing wrong with fencing and locked gates. The last thing we need is the park to go to hell in hand basket months after opening.

I knew the optimism couldn't last long on this thread!

It will be interesting to see how they incorporate the space across 107th St. How to do link the parks, separated by a road? Two distinct areas? Thematic links? Exciting either way. Beltline in Calgary has a number of nice parks. Barb Scott parking being the newest and fitting the mold of a 'great lawn' component that I bet we see here as a part of the plan.

Ok it is nice to see something happen there though. There is such a massive barren wasteland between 105th and 109th, it's not a nice area at all at the moment. At the very least, taking some of the gravel surface lots out of the equation should make it nicer. It'll take a few boom/ bust cycles for the area to develop into anything substantial but this is a start

City of Edmonton to consider converting parking lots into downtown park

The City of Edmonton is considering a proposal to convert several downtown parking lots into a large park.

The details are outlined in a report heading to the Urban Planning Committee on Wednesday.

The park, which would be located in the Warehouse Campus Neighbourhood, would centre around 106 Street and 102 Avenue and would run east to 105 Street and west to 107 Street.

If this means something to you, DECL would ask that you write the Mayor and Councillors to convey your opinion and why a large new park would be much better than surface parking that has been there for upwards of 3 decades.

I've often walked down 107 Street and admired the view all those (damned) lots provide.

Still, this almost seems like the city giving up any hope of residential - or other development - so while I think a good sized central park is a good thing, this isn't where I would ideally have it.

So, a mite reluctantly will, publicly at least, enthusiastically support.

Riddle though - is the $28 million coming from Ice District CRL funds?
