What's the point of these threads?

They show that every city has sprawl, but the replies are invariably really critical of cities that everyone knows has sprawl, and pretty nonchalant for cities people don't want to admit have sprawl.

Milwaukee also has some pretty nice inner ring suburbs. My parents happen to live in one of them, Wauwatosa. Gridded streets, no cul de sacs, old homes, quarter-acre lots, urban retail close to the sidewalk. Shorewood and Whitefish Bay are also beautiful--for suburbs.

I actually grew up in Wauwatosa. Regret ever moving.


I think it's really quite sad I oculd show you where about half of these photos were taken.


This one's rather deceptive. I'm almost positive this is on Silver Spring Drive, which is surrounded pretty much by moderately dense, somewhat run down neighbourhoods (one of the city's more infamous projects is a few blocks West).

I find these threads interesting because while every U.S. city has sprawl, it comes in different forms in different parts of our vast country. The sprawl in say Seattle is completely different than the sprawl in Miami, and the sprawl in Atlanta is completely different than the sprawl in Phoenix, etc. It's interesting in a revolting sort of way. Keep 'em coming 007, if you ever do Tulsa or Oklahoma City you'll see some really "great" sprawl!

I'm always amazed by how, when you post sprawl from a wetter climate, how much trees do to soften the visual impact. Not to say it's beautiful, but it could be a lot worse.

They don't have much coverage of Baltimore yet (I checked as recently as 2 days ago). The closest is the Northern Virginia stuff and the Phlly stuff. I think they have some eastern Baltimore suburbs but not enough to be interesting.

Detroit is next, followed by Tampa.

For some odd reason I actually *like* the desert stuff without trees. Don't ask me why, I don't know. I just do. My "favorite" of all these so far is the Phoenix stuff, especially North Phoenix.
