I always knew SEPTA bus drivers had incredibly hard jobs. I guess I never realized how hard though.

This thread is about the East Market project, not SEPTA. No more posts regarding this topic.

Lots of steel going up now, soon you will be able to see the structure above street level. I am surprised they aren't using any sort of weather barrier on the loft building to protect the workers a bit. It's got to be freezing up there with everything wide open.

psueng7, How much will the blizzard slow down or delay this project?

For people who want to talk specifically about SEPTA, either go to the Philadelphia Transportation thread or go to my thread instead. My responses were never meant to deviate from what's supposed to be a great project for the city. Thanks, and hopefully all can participate in this thread.

East Market Redevelopment in Full Swing

Quote:
As construction of the project's first phase kicks into high gear, an existing warehouse building located at 34 S. 11th Street is undergoing an interior retrofit to update the property and prepare it for the 160,000 square feet of modern offices planned. The historic Stephen Girard Building — Philadelphia's first highrise — is also undergoing significant internal upgrades and a facade refresh. Some units within the ground floor retail component of the poject have already been leased, with MOM's Organic Market expected to move in after the first phase wraps up.

Any insights on retail leasing for this project is it moves into the vertical phase? Seems like we're approaching the point where they'd want to tease out some other retail anchors, which makes me wonder if maybe they're having a hard time selling the vision to prospective tenants. They need to get it right at the outset if they want the project to become the hub of activity that the renderings depict.

We can guess! I guess mall-like stores that would cater to the transient convention hotel crowd. Think Ann Taylor Loft for ladies who need a last minute outfit for a function. I also wouldn't be surprised if they snagged a large department store, maybe a Macy's move.

There is already a Starbucks across the street at the Marriott. The Starbucks with the longest hours mind you! I could see La Colombe or Rival Bros get in there.

I'm curious who has the waterproofing and glazing on the project, anyone know? I see a lot of Grace and Dow Corning in their future...

Question for the engineer who is working on this project:

What is with all the temporary supports installed within the existing building? I see tons of them on the western half of the building going from ceiling to floor. I can't come up with any theories about why this is necessary.

Not much steel has been added over last couple of weeks. Much more concentration on foundation work on the west side of the site.

I'm sure you get this all the time, but thanks for your hard work and pictures on this site, as a temporarily displaced Philadelphian, this is by far the best site to keep up to date on all the different projects when I can no longer see them myself, and you are on top of all of them!

EDIT: thanks summersm343!

I love what this project will mean to the area but it just seems like it is going sooooo sloooow.

On a side note, the intimate space that will be created with stores and restaurants will be very similar in my opinion to the rooftop village at 1001 S. Broad. Build it...Build em all.
