Is there a sight line that's preserved through zoning in this view?

LOL. Imagine how annoyed king kong would be if he climbed today's spire.

damn, they've really cleaned the spire up a lot, they still have a few patches and everything from the 102 and up left, but damn she's really starting to sparkle again.

They should remove all the crap, put it on the Conde Nast tower (since it somehow fits the bldg more than the ESB (if possible)), renovate the whole mast to its former glory, and somehow beautify the antenna.

I just came across this but does this happen often? Is it just ESB specific?

In my opinion thats when New York's skyline was at its best, It went downhill from there.

I don't know but that has to be without a doubt the best helicopter pilot job in the world!!! Flying sweet tricked-out medium helos around the five boroughs ...man oh man.

It'd be even cooler for the people at the ESB if they took a 'bow' (nose down a bit then back) before they left.

^I like how they're at least trying to hide some of the crap on that building by painting it brown now.

As for those that have ever wondered how they cram 16 floors into the mast of the Empire State Building: they didn't. They go from 86 to "AA", "BB", etc. until they get to GG, which is now called the 102nd floor. However, there's only 97 floors in the whole tower, counting the glorified stair landings in the mast. 98 if you include a small walkway that's in the actual cone at the top.

General arrangement of mast.

They're not widows. It's grating for ventilation. The 4 floors above the observation deck are pretty much open on the northern half of the building to allow for exhaust. I assume the addition in question was added when they installed air conditioning in the building in the 50's, or when they expanded the cooling plant to make way for more computers.

Floor "AA", the 87th floor in the building, right above the Observatory. It is typical of the floors above. This is before the installation of the addition in question, as well as God knows what else in the last 80 years.

Great pics! In all the times Ive visted NYC, never did go to the ESB although I wish I had! Those upper windows that look boarded up, what exactly are they or is in there? Offices or maintenance?
