The Motor(less) City

There is no city on earth that fascinates me more than Detroit. It has some of the most bleak, depressing, and just soulless areas as well as some of the most beautiful architecture anywhere. It is a perfect place to shoot a horror movie as the city itself could be the monster.

Seriously awesome pics. They remind me of the crowds at Wings games.

Detroit definately is a grit benchmark for which other cities can evaluate themselves.

How is this city within a developed nation? I think these photos point to serious problems with the American social system. At the very least have the structures demolished so they don't become breeding grounds for criminal organizations.

P.S. I have been to Dakar, Africa (Senegal) and one could argue that it doesn't even look as dangerous and depressed as Detroit.

The current state of Detroit is more or less a direct result of deindustrialization and to a lesser extent, Michigan's poor economy. It's a localized issue.

The foggy/gray skies really add to the moodiness of these shots. Very fascinating.

What would an internet messageboard be without ignorant opportunistic swipes at America? How about you just enjoy the photos and save the bitching for city discussions.

Seriously stunning photos!

Why the hell is that old train station standing abandoned??

Something has to be done to save it, it is beautiful.

This is the kind of urban prairie that the south Bronx was dealing with 20 - 30 years ago. Man, Detroit is way far behind on getting its crap together.

Let the abandoned buildings stay. In about 50 years, they will become like the ancient ruins of Greece and Rome, and we can turn the city into a tourist destination and charge people for looking at them.

One guy proposed that back in the 90's, when there was even more empty buildings than there is now.
