Buffalo NY - Parkside - An Olmsted Designed Neighborhood

The Parkside neighborhood is located in the City of Buffalo, just to the immediate north and east of Delaware Park, about 5 miles from downtown. Planned by the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the area quickly attracted the rich and professional classes during a boom period in Buffalo's growth, beginning around 1876. Many of the houses were designed by eminent architects of the day, including Frank Lloyd Wright, W.S. Wicks, James Marling and Herbert Burdett among others.

Parkside was an integral part of Olmsted's park and parkway plan for Buffalo, the center of which was the adjacent Delaware Park, also designed by Olmsted. From the park the gently curving roads of Parkside aided the transition from the frenetic city on the outside.

After the original Parkside tracts were filled in the early 1900s, the aesthetic was continued in adjacent neighborhoods such as North Park, Central Park, and Parkside West, which was built on the grounds of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition.

Like many of Buffalo's best neighborhoods, Parkside has maintained its prestige and appearance throughout its existence.

Pretty neighborhood. Thanks for showing!

Reminds me a lot of some of the westside neighborhoods in Erie... but Parkside looks to be in better shape overall.

Buffalo has a lot of great neighborhoods, especially around Delaware park. I used to ride my bike all over the place there; I think my favorite trip was down Beard Ave., through Parkside, down Nottingham, over the pedestrian bridge to the Knox, down Lincoln through Bidwell parkway, to Elmwood village for a drink.

It is actually available for rental as a meeting space or small banquet room now.

Buffalo has a rich history of Cycling. I started my Career in Buffalo. Ricks on Allen street is truly a national treasure when it comes to cycling history. Barones in Niagara Falls also has notable history even though they are no longer in operation. Dr Kenline a early coach of mine had his home on Bidwell. Many a Crit passed by his home. He recruited kids from the Boys Club on High street.

Not in Parkside, but here is a shot of Rick's:

Here is another older bike shop, Shikluna on Hertel, established 1899 (north of the Parkside area).

The Pierce-Arrow museum downtown also has a collection of bikes, and a section dedicated to the Buffalo area's bicycle history.

Homes here don't go for sale very often, and those that do have multiple bidders. In the last year or so, average range 275k-350k, but some over 450k, and a couple below 250k along the fringes. Homes are typically 100 to 140 years old.
