Rendering VS Reality

Rendering VS Reality

I wanted to start a thread comparing computer architectural renderings to the finished result… does reality live up to the rendering?

Post away!

I don't have any pictures, but I can tell you that the rendering for our new city hall - a pretty simple project - are all wrong. They basically inverted the colour scheme.

For one, there are no fields in downtown Toronto. I rarely see a match for the buildings themselves either. It's a split down the middle when a building turns out better or worse than its rendering.

Palliser South in Calgary is looking a lot like the rendering did. I would post some pictures for comparison, but I'm lazy.

Juhani Pallasmaa wrote about this in the eyes of the skin & he said it's mostly because of our "ocularcentric" culture. louis kahn designed some of the most admired buildings of the 20th century but apparently his buildings looked boring on paper. zaha hadid is sort of the opposite; her buildings look cool in renderings but i doubt that they all look as good in real life. pallasmaa says models & drawings give a better idea of how a building will look in real life.

Vancouver House is not finished yet but it's pretty close to it's final look from this angle.

you can notice a difference in the Vancouver House rendering compared to the photo. look at the left edge of the tower. the actual building has a more varied edge, with two levels of inset corners.

I think virtually all the Winnipeg ones turned out great. Even 201 Portage turned out to be a bit of a gem as an incomplete plan. I dare say it looks better as a stand alone.

It would have been fine as a standalone, but the annoying thing about it is that they tore down buildings to clear the site for a second office tower that never came.

The TD Bank and the building to the left of it are now just a lame courtyard for hot dog carts and courier parking.
